DESCRIPTION:Do you have a preschooler who loves to sing\, dance\, play dress up\, and tell stories with music? Are you curious to see if they are the next musical theatre star? Are you unsure whether or not they are ready to start taking music lessons? Children as young as age four are often ready for private instruction! Explore four weeks of musical theatre in a small group to help determine whether your child is ready for the next step in their musical journeys with activities designed especially for busy minds and bodies who love music! \nThese introductory classes are designed to be a stepping stone towards private music lessons. We are offering graduates of this class a $50 discount for individual instruction. Intro to Musical Theatre students must register for private lessons within one year of graduation from this class in order to take advantage of this special offer. \nAccessibility: The chapel (where this group class is held) is accessible by a ramp outside Bryce Hall. Once you enter the building\, you’ll find a gender neutral\, accessible washroom available to you. There is a Handi-Transit stop across the street from Bryce Hall. SUMMARY:Mending with Tradition
DESCRIPTION:In this multifaceted exhibition\, Jannuska explores Indigenous storytelling through a large mixed media comic and a variety of mixed media art pieces. ‘The Wolf and the Eagle in the Rain’ comic focuses on the personal stories of growth and perseverance of knowledge keeper Debbie Huntinghawk (Chapter 1)\, Julia Stoneman (Chapter 2)\, and land-based teacher Grace Masse (Chapter 3). The comic is heavily connected to the Brandon\, MB community\, with Jannuska having met all three women while they were all attending Brandon University\, and appearances in the comic from other local Brandon elders. The show explores themes of motherhood\, community\, ceremony\, the Red Road\, grief\, and self-exploration. The comic chapters have given Jannuska the ability to create a visual language for how she views the beautiful intricacies of Indigenous spirituality and healing.

DESCRIPTION:If you love to sing Jazz or Blues and/or have participated in our past Blues Singing for Adults classes\, this is the class for you! This student-led class will focus on repertoire building\, performance technique and song sharing in both genres. SUMMARY:Maya de Forest: my brain like strips of confetti | School of Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:The School of Art Gallery is pleased to present my brain like strips of confetti\, a solo exhibition by Maya de Forest that reconfigures the extensive personal and professional archive of her father\, Claude Pierre de Forest\, a former professor in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba. After four years caring for Claude through the later stages of Alzheimer’s disease\, Maya began to consider the creative potential of what he left behind. \nThe archive includes slides\, notebooks\, photographs\, videotapes and other analogue materials\, some used for teaching. It reflects Claude’s engagement with the counterculture of the 1960s and 1970s\, including environmental and social movements\, metaphysics\, ancient civilizations\, ufology and the cosmic consciousness movement. Together\, these materials form a vast collection from a pre-Internet era\, when knowledge was assembled\, stored and shared in very different ways. \nThrough video\, collage\, sculpture and installation\, Maya cuts\, layers and recombines these materials\, drawing on her father’s associative methods and sense of humour. At times\, it becomes difficult to determine where Claude’s gesture ends and Maya’s begins. \nNeither biography nor an attempt to recover her father\, my brain like strips of confetti explores collecting as both a form of knowledge production and a material practice. Rather than resolving the archive into a coherent narrative\, Maya engages with its fragmented\, contradictory and often absurd nature. \nThis work was created with the support of the Winnipeg Arts Council\, the Manitoba Arts Council\, and the Canada Council for the Arts. \nOpening reception:\nOctober 29\, 5:00-8:00 pm\nMain Gallery \nArtist Talk:\nNovember 5\, 12:00 pm\nRoom 368\, ARTlab

DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 30 at 8am for a soaring discussion of creativity in global broadcasting with our Emmy-award winning speaker: Tessa Potter! \nTalk: Ground-Level Tech\, High-Altitude Careers: Creativity and Global Sports Production \nWhat does a technical career have to do with creativity? More than we often recognize. \nOver the past decade\, working in live sports production has taken me from Moscow and Beijing to Tokyo and Paris\, supporting some of the most watched sporting events in the world. Much of this work happens behind the scenes\, solving complex technical challenges that audiences never see\, but that are essential to bringing live events into homes and onto screens around the world. \nThis presentation explores the creative side of technical careers in media and entertainment. Live production requires more than technical knowledge. It demands problem-solving\, adaptability\, collaboration\, innovation and the ability to find creative solutions under pressure. \nAs streaming\, digital video and audio continue to reshape how audiences consume content\, technical roles are becoming increasingly important to the creation and delivery of premium content. Creativity is not limited to producers\, directors and writers. It exists throughout the technology ecosystem\, from engineering and networking to systems design\, operations\, audio\, video and emerging technologies. \nThrough experiences from global sports production\, this presentation will examine how a career built on technical skills can lead to creative opportunities\, international experiences and some of the biggest stages in the world. \nMeet our Speaker: \nTessa Potter is a broadcast technician who has spent more than 20 years working with a variety of wonderful people in a challenging\, but incredibly rewarding\, career in media and entertainment technology. \nA graduate of Red River College’s Electronics Engineering Technology program\, Tessa is often the person pulling cables in far-off places at international sporting events\, visiting a transmitter site on a winter day\, or solving technical problems with team members on a hockey game day. \nHer career has taken her around the world\, working on some of the biggest sporting events in broadcasting. Her work with NBC on the Paris and Beijing Olympics has earned her two Emmy Awards. \nIn 2025\, Tessa was honoured with the Red River College Distinguished Graduate Award\, recognizing her career and contributions to the industry. \nTessa has also spent years working behind the scenes on major international sporting productions. Most recently\, she spent the summer in Miami working on the FIFA World Cup\, watching all 104 games while coordinating with crews working across 16 cities for Telemundo. \nAfter five years on the WABE Executive\, including serving as President and helping lead organizational change and growth\, Tessa continues to volunteer with the Western Association of Broadcast Engineers (WABE) and support its work connecting and growing the media and entertainment technology community. \nAfter another summer working on major international productions\, Tessa is happy to be home in Winnipeg with her family.

DESCRIPTION:How does anyone get a piece of theatre off the ground? From the script to the stage\, ‘Producer Daph’ will walk you through the steps to take a production from hypothetical to real. We’ll covering the nuts and bolts of bringing a show to life – building a team\, gathering props and costumes\, marketing and promotion\, as well as how the heck anyone gets money to do this. \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nDaphne (she/her) is a director and creator based in Winnipeg. She is a graduate of the University of Manitoba with a BA in Theatre and Film Studies. In 2022\, she graduated with honours from the inaugural Red River College Digital Film and Media Production program. Directing credits include The Ghost of a Flea (Wych Elm Productions;) Prophecy (Assistant Director\, Theatre Projects Manitoba); FanAddict\, How to Live Forever\, The Other Woman\, Fashionably Late\, She’s Not There\, Come Together\, (Art)ist (Hypothetical Projects); Inhibition Exhibition\, Embracing Shadows\, (Director of Photography/Editor\, Village Conservatory); 12th Night: A Musical (Assistant Director\, The Village Conservatory/The Keep Theatre); and It’s a Wonderful Life: The Radio Play (Apprentice Director\, RMTC). She was the recipient of the inaugural Dan Augusta Promise Prize from Sick + Twisted Theatre and received the Gladys Cameron Watt Award in the 84th National One-Act Playwriting Competition.
