DESCRIPTION:Upon request from the recent Blues Singing for Adults class\, we are pleased to introduce a class that focuses strictly on vocal technique for Jazz\, Blues and similar styles of singing. Led by MCMA Vocal Workshop Instructor Adèle M. Wilding\, singers will be introduced to basic skills to facilitate effective singing: posture\, breathing and support\, and vocal placement\, among other skills. DESCRIPTION:If you love to sing Jazz or Blues and/or have participated in our past Blues Singing for Adults classes\, this is the class for you! This student-led class will focus on repertoire building\, performance technique and song sharing in both genres. Although new jazz and blues songs will be explored\, participants are encouraged to bring songs from their own repertoire to each class. Weeks one to four will explore the above learning objectives\, while weeks five and six will prepare singers for performance settings. SUMMARY:Halloween Clay Creatures Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, October 17 and spend the afternoon making a cute (or spooky) ceramic Halloween creature! Choose to create either a Ghost or a Pumpkin Jack-o’-lantern and ceramic artist Solange Roy will guide you through all the steps of making your piece\, from hand building the shape to finishing with under glazing. \nHalloween as we know it\, originates from the Celtic new year celebration of Samhain\, which marks the end of warm weather and the harvest and the beginning of the dark\, cold winter. The belief is that on the night before the new year (the night of October 31)\, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead becomes blurred. Traditionally\, to both honour the dead and ward off unfriendly spirits\, this day is celebrated by lighting sacred bonfires\, feasting\, offering gifts of food\, wearing costumes\, and carving root vegetables into lanterns with scary faces to leave on your doorstep. \nWhether you celebrate Halloween with a passion\, you’re new to the whole thing\, or you’re just looking to spend an afternoon being creative with friends\, this workshop will be fun for everyone! \nNote: This workshop is open to all skill levels and children under 12 are welcome to attend with an adult. All supplies are provided. Ceramics will be fired and available for pickup before Halloween! We will reach out to participants with pick up times as soon as firing is finished.

SUMMARY:Clowning Around with Philip Geller
DESCRIPTION:Clown is… the wise-fool… the prophet and the poop…the sacred and the profane. My clown practice draws from Pochinko\, Gaulier\, and trickster methods (if that means nothing to ya\, don’t even worry ‘bout it bb). This isn’t the scary Halloween clown\, or maybe necessarily even the circus clown\, this is the trickster within calling to be unleashed to teach lessons\, get in (and out of) trouble\, and tell really really really good stories. Whether or not you wanna be a clown in real life\, this practice can open unexpected and explosive pathways for creation and performance.  Please come prepared to move and play! \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nPhilip Jonah Logan Geller is a pretty okay clown…okay…okkaaayy? \nThey have trained and worked with some people who said they knew what they were doing including Micheal Kennard (Mump and Smoot)\, Jan Henderson (Fool Moon Productions)\, Karen Hines (Poxy Plays)\, and Natty (Nathanial) Justiano (Naked Empire Bouffon). They recently trained at the prestigious (AKA over-priced) Ecole Philippe Gaulier. Philip has performed\, directed\, and taught clown (or clown adjacent) work across so-called Canada for the past ten years. \nPhilip’s practice is ever evolving and includes a weaving of traditional European clown with Michif trickster narratives. All of this to say Philip has learnt (is learning) how to play with abundance. Philip is Jewish (Ashkenazi) and Red River Michif (Métis) with Logan\, Dupuis\, Vandal ancestors\, and roots to the historic Métis community of Rooster Town. \nPhilip has worked across Turtle Island with companies including The Stratford Festival\, Native Earth Performing Arts\, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre\, Gwaandak Theatre\, and Centre for Indigenous Theatre. They are a graduate of the MFA Directing Program at York University and the BFA Acting Program at the University of Alberta.

More than we often recognize. \nOver the past decade\, working in live sports production has taken me from Moscow and Beijing to Tokyo and Paris\, supporting some of the most watched sporting events in the world. Much of this work happens behind the scenes\, solving complex technical challenges that audiences never see\, but that are essential to bringing live events into homes and onto screens around the world. \nThis presentation explores the creative side of technical careers in media and entertainment. Live production requires more than technical knowledge. It demands problem-solving\, adaptability\, collaboration\, innovation and the ability to find creative solutions under pressure. \nAs streaming\, digital video and audio continue to reshape how audiences consume content\, technical roles are becoming increasingly important to the creation and delivery of premium content. Creativity is not limited to producers\, directors and writers. It exists throughout the technology ecosystem\, from engineering and networking to systems design\, operations\, audio\, video and emerging technologies. \nThrough experiences from global sports production\, this presentation will examine how a career built on technical skills can lead to creative opportunities\, international experiences and some of the biggest stages in the world. \nMeet our Speaker: \nTessa Potter is a broadcast technician who has spent more than 20 years working with a variety of wonderful people in a challenging\, but incredibly rewarding\, career in media and entertainment technology. \nA graduate of Red River College’s Electronics Engineering Technology program\, Tessa is often the person pulling cables in far-off places at international sporting events\, visiting a transmitter site on a winter day\, or solving technical problems with team members on a hockey game day. \nHer career has taken her around the world\, working on some of the biggest sporting events in broadcasting. Her work with NBC on the Paris and Beijing Olympics has earned her two Emmy Awards. \nIn 2025\, Tessa was honoured with the Red River College Distinguished Graduate Award\, recognizing her career and contributions to the industry. \nTessa has also spent years working behind the scenes on major international sporting productions. Most recently\, she spent the summer in Miami working on the FIFA World Cup\, watching all 104 games while coordinating with crews working across 16 cities for Telemundo. \nAfter five years on the WABE Executive\, including serving as President and helping lead organizational change and growth\, Tessa continues to volunteer with the Western Association of Broadcast Engineers (WABE) and support its work connecting and growing the media and entertainment technology community. \nAfter another summer working on major international productions\, Tessa is happy to be home in Winnipeg with her family.

She is a graduate of the University of Manitoba with a BA in Theatre and Film Studies. In 2022\, she graduated with honours from the inaugural Red River College Digital Film and Media Production program. Directing credits include The Ghost of a Flea (Wych Elm Productions;) Prophecy (Assistant Director\, Theatre Projects Manitoba); FanAddict\, How to Live Forever\, The Other Woman\, Fashionably Late\, She’s Not There\, Come Together\, (Art)ist (Hypothetical Projects); Inhibition Exhibition\, Embracing Shadows\, (Director of Photography/Editor\, Village Conservatory); 12th Night: A Musical (Assistant Director\, The Village Conservatory/The Keep Theatre); and It’s a Wonderful Life: The Radio Play (Apprentice Director\, RMTC). She was the recipient of the inaugural Dan Augusta Promise Prize from Sick + Twisted Theatre and received the Gladys Cameron Watt Award in the 84th National One-Act Playwriting Competition.

Voice transition\, vocal exploration\, and identity‑centred artistry deserve thoughtful\, informed support\, and Trans Voices Forward aims to create exactly that. SUMMARY:English Paper Piecing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this 3-hour workshop you will learn the basics of the traditional English Paper Piecing method for piecing a quilt\, and complete a simple quilt block. Options for finishing off the quilted block as a decorative patch\, wall hanging or mug rug will be discussed but not completed during the workshop. \nBeginner level\, basic hand sewing skills desired. \nAbout the instructor: \nAnna Schmidt is a fibre artist from Winnipeg\, Manitoba\, working predominantly in the medium of quilt-making. She is inspired by the words of Georgia O’Keefe who said\, “I found that I could say things with colour and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way.” Anna loves improvisation and scrap quilting\, and has a particular fondness for the meditative nature of hand-stitching. She works extensively with second-hand or repurposed fabric\, both as a nod to quilting traditions and as an ecological response to textile overconsumption. Anna likes to blur the lines between quilts as Art Objects to be observed and quilts as household items to be used. As a retired educator\, she loves to teach others how they can learn to express themselves with fabric. \nWorkshop Registration:  \n$15 Supply Fee \n$65 Regular Registration (total fee $80) \n$55 MCML Discounted Registration (total fee $70)

DESCRIPTION:Want to learn how to swing it? Swings and understudies are the backbone of our industry\, a demanding and rewarding job that is necessary for the show to go on! \nThis workshop is for anyone who would like to learn  how to set yourself up for success while working as a Swing or Understudy within regional theatre. From prep\, to the rehearsal process\, to put ins\, to swing ons\, let’s demystify the process and learn what to expect when hired as a cover. \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nSam is a Winnipeg-based performer\, with on stage credits including Legally Blonde\, Mary Poppins\, The Little Mermaid\, The Wizard of Oz (Rainbow); The Perfect Man (Gargoyle); A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder (Grindstone); The Prom (Dry Cold); Reefer Madness (WST). Sam also works behind the scenes as a Choreographer and Intimacy Director\, on productions including Dogfight (Dry Cold – Choreographer); Waitress (RMTC – Intimacy Director); and The Sound of Music (RMTC – Apprentice Director/Choreographer & Intimacy Director). Beyond the theatre\, Sam works in the film industry as a Stunt Performer and Intimacy Director\, and is a theatre and dance educator\, who has taught at The Royal Winnipeg Ballet\, U of M\, U of W\, Drop in Dance\, and within Rainbow Stage’s Education programming. Sam is a sought after theatre professional known for her versatility\, reliability\, and diverse skillset\, which has translated into her experiences as a swing\, understudy\, and dance captain.

SUMMARY:Intro to Indigenous Dance-2 pm (fall)
DESCRIPTION:The MCMA is so excited to offer an introductory experience of Indigenous Dance! Learn the basics and teachings of some familiar Indigenous Dances. This four week program is for EVERYONE\, ages six & up. Our gifted instructor\, Meg Olmstead\, will not only show you the steps\, but create space for understanding and teaching of why those steps exist. Children and adults are welcome to register and participate equally as this is intended as a community building program!
