EVER FUNNY – From TikTok to Stand Up with Sherry Mckay

Brought to you in partnership with the Winnipeg Comedy Festival

Tuesday Dec 17th  from 6 pm – 7:30 pm CST

ONLINE and FREE to attend!

Sherry Mckay is an Indigenous influencer, stand up comedian and TikTok creator who has amassed over 600K followers on the viral platform, and she wants to introduce you to the techniques that have helped rapidly grow her brand with a focus on TikTok.

The magic of TikTok is that you don’t need fans and you don’t need a follower base- you just need to make something and share it! The app will push your work to a handful of people and if what you do is deemed good by the users, it’ll spread. You don’t need a distributor, you don’t need funding, you just create and get it out there.

For stand up comedians, TikTok also provides a platform to test out material. Where else can you get such swift feedback from a large audience? But once you’ve tested your material, how do you turn that content into a reel and then translate it from the digital world to the stage for live performance?

Mckay will take us behind the scenes of her Tik-Tokkery and show us how it’s done and talk about:

  • Camera/phone techniques
  • Lighting
  • Sound
  • Timing and Length of videos
  • Content
  • Imposter syndrome
  • Social consciousness
  • What works and what doesn’t
  • Making a tight 5 highlight reel

TikTok can help us understand our social presence. It has emerged as a significant platform for people to leverage digital tools for social advocacy, showcasing the joy and resilience of their communities, and giving us a good laugh. You know in your little clown heart that it’s time to take the inevitable plunge into the digital realm.

“I’m here all week, don’t forget to try the moose meat, and tip your waitress!”

Register by 3 pm CST on Tuesday Dec 17th and a Zoom link will be sent to you by 4 pm CST.

If you haven’t received the link in your inbox, be sure to check your spam and junk mail folders.

Sherry Mckay is an Anishinaabe woman and Deadly Auntie from Treaty 1 Territory. Born and raised in Winnipeg, band member of Sagkeeng First Nation, proud mother of four, social media influencer and aspiring filmmaker, Sherry discovered a way to share important messages and engage in education and discussions regarding Indigenous issues such as MMIWG2S, systemic racism and cultural appropriation. It was through media she noticed a shift where Indigenous people can share and educate.

Her short period at Red River College’s Creative Communications program gave her the necessary skills to start her journey into media production. Her focus is to assert Indigenous representation in media and film. Tiktok is where she has had the biggest impact on her journey with over 600k followers. Her future aspirations are to write and direct her own movie and sitcom series with an Indigenous focus and content surrounding Indigenous comedy and awareness.
