SUMMARY:Serious Play
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Run: May 1st – June 25th\, 2026\nOpening reception: May 1st | 6-9pm \n‘Serious Play’ is a textiles exhibition exploring the radical potential of play. “All four artists embrace a spirit of play that is neither trivial nor naïve; the kind of play that comes from relaxing into yourself\, knowing your tools intimately\, and trusting your hands to lead the way. These are works that seem to move\, speak\, laugh\, and whisper. In their presence\, we’re invited to imagine: are these objects simply handmade\, or have they been brought to life?“ -Katrina Craig\, In an excerpt from her curatorial essay \nCurator: Katrina Craig\nArtists: Charlotte Sigurdson\, Candace Neumann\, Maureen Winnicki Lyons\, and Miriam Delos Santos \nThis exhibition is possible from the support of Canada Council for the Arts\, Manitoba Arts Council and Winnipeg Arts Council

SUMMARY:European Union Short Film Festival in Winnipeg
DESCRIPTION:The European Union Short Film Festival (EUSFF)\, will take place in Winnipeg from May 23–26\, 2026\, as part of a special multi-city edition presented in Ottawa\, Montréal\, Winnipeg\, and Québec City. \nFollowing more than a decade of success in Ottawa and a well-received expansion into Montréal\, this year marks the Festival’s first edition in Winnipeg. We are very excited about the opportunity to connect with and contribute to the city’s vibrant film and arts community while fostering new cultural partnerships across Canada. \nThe 2026 programme features 27 short films from across the European Union\, presented over four curated evenings of screenings. The selection highlights the diversity of contemporary European storytelling through a wide range of genres\, themes\, and artistic perspectives. Alongside the screenings\, participating EU Member States will also present Flavours of Europe\, an on-site showcase of culinary offerings and cultural displays that celebrate Europe’s rich cultural heritage beyond the screen. \nThis edition carries particular significance as it takes place during Europe Month and forms part of the celebrations marking the 50th Anniversary of the Delegation of the European Union to Canada\, underscoring the longstanding cultural partnership between Canada and the European Union. \nA reception is scheduled for our closing evening on Tuesday\, May 26 at 5:00 PM. \nAdmission is free for all four screenings; however\, reservations are required and can be made through the following link: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.ca/e/winnipeg-european-union-short-film-festival-festival-du-court-metrage-tickets-1987466120668?aff=odcleoeventsincollection \nYou can also view the Festival programme here: \nhttps://www.eeas.europa.eu/sites/default/files/2026/documents/EUSFF_2026_PDF_EN_Program_0.pdf \n

SUMMARY:House on Fire featuring the work of Sarah Anne Johnson
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception | Thursday\, June 4\, 2026 | 7 – 10PM \nPlug In Institute of Contemporary Art is elated to announce House on Fire\, an exhibition by Sarah Anne Johnson. \nHouse on Fire is the title of a long series of works produced by artist Sarah Anne Johnson. Coming from a deeply personal narrative\, House on Fire is the artist’s belated response to a family trauma unearthed and fragmented\, but one that she has ultimately reassembled. Johnson’s grandmother\, Velma Orlikow\, was a victim of psychiatric experiments performed at the Allan Memorial Institute in Montreal. \nThe installation\, which centres on a dollhouse of secrets\, also includes altered family photos\, archival newspaper clippings\, and small bronze figures of distress. Over time\, the project grew from the original installation to include performances created for video. \nThis iteration of House on Fire is currently presented as a reconsideration of the original installation and an introduction to new works by this remarkable artist. \nPlug In ICA would like to thank Michael Nesbitt for making this exhibition possible. \n\nSarah Anne Johnson is a Winnipeg-born multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans photography\, painting\, sculpture\, video\, and performance. She holds a BFA from the University of Manitoba and an MFA from the Yale School of Art. Sarah is the recipient of numerous grants and awards and her work is held in several major permanent collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the National Gallery of Canada\, the Art Gallery of Ontario\, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, and the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum. Sarah is best known for her photo-based practice in which she physically and digitally alters large-format prints with oil paint\, gold leaf\, stickers\, and other materials. \nHer relationship with nature has remained a consistent subject across her body of work\, from her early series of photographs documenting her time as a treeplanter in Northern Canada to her current work that examines the nostalgia we feel for a deeper\, wild\, more rugged connection with the natural world.
