SUMMARY:CreativeMornings WPG | ALTITUDE with Tessa Potter
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 30 at 8am for a soaring discussion of creativity in global broadcasting with our Emmy-award winning speaker: Tessa Potter! \nTalk: Ground-Level Tech\, High-Altitude Careers: Creativity and Global Sports Production \nWhat does a technical career have to do with creativity? More than we often recognize. \nOver the past decade\, working in live sports production has taken me from Moscow and Beijing to Tokyo and Paris\, supporting some of the most watched sporting events in the world. Much of this work happens behind the scenes\, solving complex technical challenges that audiences never see\, but that are essential to bringing live events into homes and onto screens around the world. \nThis presentation explores the creative side of technical careers in media and entertainment. Live production requires more than technical knowledge. It demands problem-solving\, adaptability\, collaboration\, innovation and the ability to find creative solutions under pressure. \nAs streaming\, digital video and audio continue to reshape how audiences consume content\, technical roles are becoming increasingly important to the creation and delivery of premium content. Creativity is not limited to producers\, directors and writers. It exists throughout the technology ecosystem\, from engineering and networking to systems design\, operations\, audio\, video and emerging technologies. \nThrough experiences from global sports production\, this presentation will examine how a career built on technical skills can lead to creative opportunities\, international experiences and some of the biggest stages in the world. \nMeet our Speaker: \nTessa Potter is a broadcast technician who has spent more than 20 years working with a variety of wonderful people in a challenging\, but incredibly rewarding\, career in media and entertainment technology. \nA graduate of Red River College’s Electronics Engineering Technology program\, Tessa is often the person pulling cables in far-off places at international sporting events\, visiting a transmitter site on a winter day\, or solving technical problems with team members on a hockey game day. \nHer career has taken her around the world\, working on some of the biggest sporting events in broadcasting. Her work with NBC on the Paris and Beijing Olympics has earned her two Emmy Awards. \nIn 2025\, Tessa was honoured with the Red River College Distinguished Graduate Award\, recognizing her career and contributions to the industry. \nTessa has also spent years working behind the scenes on major international sporting productions. Most recently\, she spent the summer in Miami working on the FIFA World Cup\, watching all 104 games while coordinating with crews working across 16 cities for Telemundo. \nAfter five years on the WABE Executive\, including serving as President and helping lead organizational change and growth\, Tessa continues to volunteer with the Western Association of Broadcast Engineers (WABE) and support its work connecting and growing the media and entertainment technology community. \nAfter another summer working on major international productions\, Tessa is happy to be home in Winnipeg with her family.

SUMMARY:Trans Voices Forward
DESCRIPTION:Trans Voices Forward: A New Chapter in Gender‑Affirming Vocal Education \nRainbow Harmony Project is excited to launch Trans Voices Forward\, a new initiative dedicated to uplifting\, supporting\, and celebrating trans and gender‑diverse singers across Manitoba. This project has been in development for over a year\, shaped by community conversations\, singer feedback\, and a growing need for accessible\, gender‑affirming vocal education in our province. \nWhy Trans Voices Forward? \nFor many trans and gender‑expansive singers\, traditional vocal spaces haven’t always felt welcoming or accessible. Voice transition\, vocal exploration\, and identity‑centred artistry deserve thoughtful\, informed support\, and Trans Voices Forward aims to create exactly that. Through workshops\, learning spaces\, individual coaching\, and community events\, this project offers singers and educators a chance to learn in environments rooted in care\, curiosity\, and affirmation. \nTwo Artist Residencies\, One Shared Mission \nTrans Voices Forward will unfold through two artist residencies this season\, each led by acclaimed vocal and choral specialists who bring deep expertise and lived experience to their work. \nNovember – Dr. Cee Adamson \nDr. Cee Adamson (she/they) joins RHP for a week of workshops\, one‑on‑one lessons\, and ensemble coaching. Community singers\, teachers\, and curious learners will have multiple opportunities to engage with gender‑affirming vocal technique and explore new approaches to voice. Cee will also work directly with RHP on repertoire and ensemble sound\, offering a behind‑the‑scenes look at gender‑affirming choral practice. \nWho Is This For? \nTrans Voices Forward is designed for: \n\ntrans and gender‑expansive singers\ncommunity singers of any age\, background\, or experience\nteachers\, conductors\, and music educators\nallies and learners interested in gender‑affirming voice work\nanyone curious about how voice\, identity\, and artistry intersect\n\nWhether you’re stepping into vocal exploration for the first time or deepening your professional practice\, there’s a place for you here. \nJoin Us \nWe invite you to explore the events\, attend a workshop\, observe an open rehearsal\, or sign up for one‑on‑one coaching. This project is about learning\, connection\, and building a future where trans voices are supported\, celebrated\, and heard. \nWelcome to Trans Voices Forward — we’re so glad you’re here!

SUMMARY:English Paper Piecing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this 3-hour workshop you will learn the basics of the traditional English Paper Piecing method for piecing a quilt\, and complete a simple quilt block. Options for finishing off the quilted block as a decorative patch\, wall hanging or mug rug will be discussed but not completed during the workshop. \nBeginner level\, basic hand sewing skills desired. \nAbout the instructor: \nAnna Schmidt is a fibre artist from Winnipeg\, Manitoba\, working predominantly in the medium of quilt-making. She is inspired by the words of Georgia O’Keefe who said\, “I found that I could say things with colour and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way.” Anna loves improvisation and scrap quilting\, and has a particular fondness for the meditative nature of hand-stitching. She works extensively with second-hand or repurposed fabric\, both as a nod to quilting traditions and as an ecological response to textile overconsumption. Anna likes to blur the lines between quilts as Art Objects to be observed and quilts as household items to be used. As a retired educator\, she loves to teach others how they can learn to express themselves with fabric. \nWorkshop Registration:  \n$15 Supply Fee \n$65 Regular Registration (total fee $80) \n$55 MCML Discounted Registration (total fee $70)

But when she started looking for those experiences\, she realized there simply weren’t many happening close to home. She wondered\, “Why are we travelling across North America looking for inspiration when we have our own Indigenous powerhouses right here? We have the storytellers. We have the entrepreneurs. We have the artists\, leaders\, comedians\, musicians\, professionals\, dreamers and changemakers. We can create our own stage.” \nAnd that is how Driving While Indigenous was born. \nJill and her team of volunteers have created a space for Indigenous people to come together\, laugh\, connect\, dream bigger and leave feeling motivated about what is possible. Created with community service providers in mind— the people who spend their days pouring into others\, supporting families\, helping our youth\, strengthening communities and carrying so much responsibility.  \n\n “We cannot tell our youth to chase their dreams if we are not chasing ours.”\n\nCreative Manitoba is thrilled to partner with the Featherstone Group\, bringing speaker Dawn Chartrand to the stage! \n \nDawn Chartrand is an Anishinaabe artist\, entrepreneur\, wellness facilitator\, singer/songwriter\, and speaker from Rolling River First Nation\, based in Winnipeg\, Manitoba. Her work is rooted in creativity\, culture\, connection\, and the belief that art\, movement\, music\, and laughter can be powerful pathways to wellness and healing. Dawn began painting in 2017 as a way to express her visions\, dreams\, and life experiences. Since then\, her artwork has reached audiences throughout Turtle Island and beyond\, with original paintings and murals featured in Indigenous businesses\, schools\, organizations\, and communities. \nThrough OM-Digenous Yoga & Wellness (est. 2022)\, Dawn facilitates culturally grounded experiences that bring together art\, gentle movement\, breathwork\, laughter\, music\, and Indigenous teachings. She has worked with children\, youth\, families\, adults\, and Elders in communities and organizations across Manitoba and beyond. \nAs a speaker and facilitator\, Dawn shares from lived experience with warmth\, humour\, and authenticity. Her presentations explore themes of\nidentity\, resilience\, healing\, creativity\, and reconnecting with culture and community. Whether she is speaking\, painting\, singing\, or facilitating a wellness experience\, Dawn’s goal is to create spaces where people feel welcomed\, connected\, and inspired. \n\n\nEarly Bird ticket sales end Oct. 20th and we are 65% sold out! SUMMARY:Loom Beaded Earring Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this 6 hour workshop you will learn how to plan out a pattern\, choose beads\, prepare the loom\, make a pair of earrings\, remove from the loom and finish them off. \nThe instructor will give the recommended size to work with based on the time allotted for this workshop. If you choose to make a larger or more detailed pair of earrings and are unable to complete them in time\, you are able to rent a loom and buy some extra beads to take home. \nYou will have multiple bead options available in various shapes\, colours\, sizes and finishes. \nAll materials are included: Looms\, various beads\, paper and markers for planning patterns\, tools\, etc. \nThere will be 30 minutes for lunch (bring your own bag lunch please). \nAbout the Instructor: \nShanelle St. Hilaire (she/they) is a Red River Métis beader from Treaty One Territory Winnipeg Manitoba. Her beadwork is contemporary\, sleek\, colourful and for all! Most of their work is beadwoven using a beading loom\, the imagery they often work is very geometric using circles to represent moons. Space imagery such as the solar system and stars has more recently made it’s way into their beadwork. They also use the traditional Ceinture Flechee pattern and reinvent it to honour her metis culture and community. In 2022 St. Hilaire began loom beading practicing to make their own large-scale beaded Ceinture Fléchée which quickly blossomed into a deep love and obsession with beading and is now a part of her daily practice. They started this business as wearable art and expression of self and culture is very important to them. \nRegistration Information: \n$25 Supply Fee \n$125 Regular Registration (total fee $150) \n$115 MCML Discounted Registration (total fee $140)

SUMMARY:Anne of Green Gables – The Musical™
DESCRIPTION:Literally leaping from the pages of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s cherished novel\, this gorgeous musical shares the heartwarming coming-of-age story of a gregarious orphan from Prince Edward Island. \nWhen loyal siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert adopt a child to help with the family farm\, they get much more than they bargained for. While Anne Shirley’s arrival disrupts the quiet lives of Avonlea’s quirky citizens\, her wild imagination and unwavering enthusiasm opens the hearts of her new family\, her classmate Diana Barry and a rascally rival named Gilbert Blythe. Make no mistake\, “Anne with an E” is unstoppable\, and her story will delight audiences of all ages. \nThe triumphant return of director Julie Tomaino (Elf – The Musical) promises show-stopping song and dance\, and a dynamic new perspective to this Canadian classic. \nShows generally begin at 7:30pm or 2:00pm depending on the date. See website for specific details. \n

SUMMARY:Building Your Artist Bundle: Session 1 - Asemaa
DESCRIPTION:Urban Art Biz – Building Your Artist Bundle is a series of four workshops to help Indigenous Artists prepare a fully realized grant application in time for the spring 2027 funding deadlines. Our goal is to walk you through each step of the grant application process to help you increase your chances of securing funding for your project. \nThis workshop will be held IN PERSON. \nOur first session – Asemaa (Tobacco) will introduce you to funding opportunities and discovering where you can ask for support for your artistic vision. \nTobacco\, or asemaa\, is known as the first medicine that the Creator gave to the Anishinaabe people. It is used for smudging and offered as a gesture of reverence in almost every aspect of life. This sacred herb is a conduit for communicating with the spirit world\, a medium through which thoughts and feelings are conveyed. When tobacco is offered\, prayers are shared not only for oneself but also for family\, relatives\, and the collective community. In most Anishinaabe teachings\, tobacco sits in the eastern doorway\, which signifies new beginnings\, as the sun rises in the east. Asemaa is a medicine of gratitude\, humility\, and offered as a gift of respect when seeking guidance\, teachings\, or requests for help.  \nEach of our four workshops will be led by an established Indigenous Artist or Relational Maker. \nSession 1 Asemaa Topics Covered: \n\nResearching Available Grants\nExploring grant guidelines\nPreparing your Artist CV\nCreating an Artist profile on funders’ profiles.\n\nWe ask that you bring: \n\n A laptop\, a tablet\, something for you to take notes on.\n A version of your artist resume – it can just be in note formation\n An idea for an artistic project you want funding for\n\nFor those new to the granting world\, we will guide you through the maze of funding opportunities to help you find which grant is right for your project. We will help you prepare your artist CV to highlight your skills and experience. We will help you create an artist profile on the funders’ websites/portals so that you will be able to apply for a grant. For those who are a bit more familiar\, we hope to expand your knowledge and help you create a more defined vision for your project. \nLight refreshments will be offered. \nMAXIMUM 20 participants. \nUrban Art Biz is a series of workshops focused on the business side of art from an Indigenous perspective. Urban Art Biz was developed by Creative Manitoba’s Indigenous Programs and is presented in partnership with Urban Shaman Contemporary Indigenous Art Gallery. \nFor information on all sessions in Urban Art Biz – Building Your Artist Bundle series\, click here. \nWorkshops will be held IN PERSON at Creative Manitoba.
