SUMMARY:Maya de Forest: my brain like strips of confetti | School of Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:The School of Art Gallery is pleased to present my brain like strips of confetti\, a solo exhibition by Maya de Forest that reconfigures the extensive personal and professional archive of her father\, Claude Pierre de Forest\, a former professor in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba. After four years caring for Claude through the later stages of Alzheimer’s disease\, Maya began to consider the creative potential of what he left behind. \nThe archive includes slides\, notebooks\, photographs\, videotapes and other analogue materials\, some used for teaching. It reflects Claude’s engagement with the counterculture of the 1960s and 1970s\, including environmental and social movements\, metaphysics\, ancient civilizations\, ufology and the cosmic consciousness movement. Together\, these materials form a vast collection from a pre-Internet era\, when knowledge was assembled\, stored and shared in very different ways. \nThrough video\, collage\, sculpture and installation\, Maya cuts\, layers and recombines these materials\, drawing on her father’s associative methods and sense of humour. At times\, it becomes difficult to determine where Claude’s gesture ends and Maya’s begins. \nNeither biography nor an attempt to recover her father\, my brain like strips of confetti explores collecting as both a form of knowledge production and a material practice. Rather than resolving the archive into a coherent narrative\, Maya engages with its fragmented\, contradictory and often absurd nature. \nThis work was created with the support of the Winnipeg Arts Council\, the Manitoba Arts Council\, and the Canada Council for the Arts. \nOpening reception:\nOctober 29\, 5:00-8:00 pm\nMain Gallery \nArtist Talk:\nNovember 5\, 12:00 pm\nRoom 368\, ARTlab

SUMMARY:Trans Voices Forward
DESCRIPTION:Trans Voices Forward: A New Chapter in Gender‑Affirming Vocal Education \nRainbow Harmony Project is excited to launch Trans Voices Forward\, a new initiative dedicated to uplifting\, supporting\, and celebrating trans and gender‑diverse singers across Manitoba. This project has been in development for over a year\, shaped by community conversations\, singer feedback\, and a growing need for accessible\, gender‑affirming vocal education in our province. \nWhy Trans Voices Forward? \nFor many trans and gender‑expansive singers\, traditional vocal spaces haven’t always felt welcoming or accessible. Voice transition\, vocal exploration\, and identity‑centred artistry deserve thoughtful\, informed support\, and Trans Voices Forward aims to create exactly that. Through workshops\, learning spaces\, individual coaching\, and community events\, this project offers singers and educators a chance to learn in environments rooted in care\, curiosity\, and affirmation. \nTwo Artist Residencies\, One Shared Mission \nTrans Voices Forward will unfold through two artist residencies this season\, each led by acclaimed vocal and choral specialists who bring deep expertise and lived experience to their work. \nNovember – Dr. Cee Adamson \nDr. Cee Adamson (she/they) joins RHP for a week of workshops\, one‑on‑one lessons\, and ensemble coaching. Community singers\, teachers\, and curious learners will have multiple opportunities to engage with gender‑affirming vocal technique and explore new approaches to voice. Cee will also work directly with RHP on repertoire and ensemble sound\, offering a behind‑the‑scenes look at gender‑affirming choral practice. \nWho Is This For? \nTrans Voices Forward is designed for: \n\ntrans and gender‑expansive singers\ncommunity singers of any age\, background\, or experience\nteachers\, conductors\, and music educators\nallies and learners interested in gender‑affirming voice work\nanyone curious about how voice\, identity\, and artistry intersect\n\nWhether you’re stepping into vocal exploration for the first time or deepening your professional practice\, there’s a place for you here. \nJoin Us \nWe invite you to explore the events\, attend a workshop\, observe an open rehearsal\, or sign up for one‑on‑one coaching. This project is about learning\, connection\, and building a future where trans voices are supported\, celebrated\, and heard. \nWelcome to Trans Voices Forward — we’re so glad you’re here!

SUMMARY:Book Launch: "Disability Ways: An anthology about disability gain by d/Deaf and disabled writers
DESCRIPTION:Arts AccessAbility Network Manitoba (AANM) is launching an anthology on November 7\, 2026 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. CDT\, at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (85 Israel Asper Way\, Winnipeg\, Manitoba R3C 0L5). \nDisability Ways: An anthology about disability gain by d/Deaf and disabled writers features poems\, essays\, fiction\, and creative non-fiction pieces highlighting the voices of 33 writers from Manitoba\, across Canada\, and from California. \nEdited by Diane Driedger and L(ani) Zastre\, Disability Ways centres the lived experiences of d/Deaf and disabled writers through the lens of disability gain. This collection of writing platforms valuable insights on the creative and positive ways of doing things and being in the world from a cross-disability perspective. The book is divided into the disability ways of being\, knowing\, and relating\, with each section challenging the narratives and negative attitudes surrounding disability. \nReflecting on the anthology\, Diane Driedger\, AANM’s Board Chair and Assistant Professor in the Interdisciplinary Master’s Program in Disability Studies (University of Manitoba) stated\, “Society has tended to see disability as a deficit\, as negative. in Disability Ways we have turned this on its head. Disability can be positive and creative —a gain for disabled people and society.” \nThe book gathered advance praise from Debbie Patterson\, Artistic Director of Sick + Twisted Theatre\, who described the anthology as\, “a powerful collection of urgent voices demanding attention”. Nancy E. Hansen\, PhD\, Professor and Director of the Interdisciplinary Master’s Program in Disability Studies (University of Manitoba) highlighted that\, “Disability Ways presents disability as creative potential\, possibility\, and rare insight.” \nThe book launch will be held in person and online via Zoom. To join the launch virtually\, please register using this link: https://aanm.ca/book-launch-disability-ways/ \nTo order your copy of the anthology\, please visit https://aanm.ca/book-orders/ \n — \nAbout Arts AccessAbility Network Manitoba: \nArts AccessAbility Network Manitoba (AANM) is a regional not-for-profit artist-run charitable organization dedicated to the full inclusion of artists and audiences with disabilities into all facets of the art community. AANM facilitates a network of artists and partners from both the arts and disability communities that support d/Deaf and disabled artists in achieving individual artistic excellence. AANM advocates for higher visibility of artists within all disciplines\, and promotes policies and practices intended to make the arts more accessible to all Manitobans.

SUMMARY:The Stepmother
DESCRIPTION:Interesting Theatre presents the world première of The Stepmother: An Elleston Liddell Radio Adventure \nWINNIPEG\, MB — What happens when a best-selling novelist\, a Methodist minister and a former military intelligence officer find themselves sharing the same identity? For Winnipeg playwright Tim Higgins\, the answer is the Reverend Elleston Liddell\, whose remarkable adventures have become the basis of a series of historical mysteries set in Edwardian Manitoba. \nLiddell returns in The Stepmother: An Elleston Liddell Radio Adventure\, receiving its world première November 18\, 20 and 21 at Young United Church in Winnipeg. The character was inspired by a real Winnipeg clergyman\, the Reverend Charles Gordon\, who\, writing under the pen name Ralph Connor\, was one of the most widely read novelists in the British Empire before the First World War. Like Gordon\, the fictional Elleston combines literary celebrity with an active ministry\, although his earlier service in military intelligence has also equipped him with decidedly unconventional investigative skills. \nSet in Manitoba in 1909\, The Stepmother begins with the sudden death of wealthy landowner Marston Liddell during a winter hunting expedition. His daughter Emily returns from Europe to discover that her father has remarried\, leaving his new wife Hannah in charge of the family estate. The reading of Marston’s will makes both women wealthy but imposes unexpected conditions that neither welcomes. When Emily’s health begins to deteriorate and her relationship with Hannah becomes increasingly troubled\, Elleston and his wife Pamela find themselves drawn into a mystery involving a disputed inheritance\, disturbing family secrets and questions about the deaths of both Emily’s parents. Is the young woman’s increasingly erratic behaviour the result of grief\, illness and family conflict\, or is something more sinister taking place at Endicott Grange? \nThe mystery\, however\, is only part of the entertainment. Interesting Theatre brings radio drama to life in a distinctive theatrical experience that lets audiences watch the illusion being created. Actors perform at microphones\, Foley artists produce sound effects in full view\, and the Elleston Trio performs the musical score live onstage. Without conventional sets or scenery\, the company transports audiences into the world of Edwardian Manitoba\, where country estates\, railway journeys and winter landscapes take shape through voices\, music\, sound … and the\naudience’s imagination. \nWritten and directed by Tim Higgins\, The Stepmother is presented by Interesting Theatre as a fundraiser in support of Young United Church’s continuing ministry in Winnipeg’s West Broadway neighbourhood. \nDates: Wednesday\, November 18; Friday\, November 20; and Saturday\, November 21\,\n2026\nCurtain: 7:00 p.m. each evening\nVenue: Young United Church\, 222 Furby Street\, Winnipeg\nTickets: $20\, available at the church office or at the door\nInformation: 204-783-0128\nRunning time: Approximately two hours\, including intermission

But when she started looking for those experiences\, she realized there simply weren’t many happening close to home. She wondered\, “Why are we travelling across North America looking for inspiration when we have our own Indigenous powerhouses right here? We have the storytellers. We have the entrepreneurs. We have the artists\, leaders\, comedians\, musicians\, professionals\, dreamers and changemakers. We can create our own stage.” \nAnd that is how Driving While Indigenous was born. \nJill and her team of volunteers have created a space for Indigenous people to come together\, laugh\, connect\, dream bigger and leave feeling motivated about what is possible. Created with community service providers in mind— the people who spend their days pouring into others\, supporting families\, helping our youth\, strengthening communities and carrying so much responsibility.  \n\n “We cannot tell our youth to chase their dreams if we are not chasing ours.”\n\nCreative Manitoba is thrilled to partner with the Featherstone Group\, bringing speaker Dawn Chartrand to the stage! \n \nDawn Chartrand is an Anishinaabe artist\, entrepreneur\, wellness facilitator\, singer/songwriter\, and speaker from Rolling River First Nation\, based in Winnipeg\, Manitoba. Her work is rooted in creativity\, culture\, connection\, and the belief that art\, movement\, music\, and laughter can be powerful pathways to wellness and healing. Dawn began painting in 2017 as a way to express her visions\, dreams\, and life experiences. Since then\, her artwork has reached audiences throughout Turtle Island and beyond\, with original paintings and murals featured in Indigenous businesses\, schools\, organizations\, and communities. \nThrough OM-Digenous Yoga & Wellness (est. 2022)\, Dawn facilitates culturally grounded experiences that bring together art\, gentle movement\, breathwork\, laughter\, music\, and Indigenous teachings. She has worked with children\, youth\, families\, adults\, and Elders in communities and organizations across Manitoba and beyond. \nAs a speaker and facilitator\, Dawn shares from lived experience with warmth\, humour\, and authenticity. Her presentations explore themes of\nidentity\, resilience\, healing\, creativity\, and reconnecting with culture and community. Whether she is speaking\, painting\, singing\, or facilitating a wellness experience\, Dawn’s goal is to create spaces where people feel welcomed\, connected\, and inspired. \n\n\nEarly Bird ticket sales end Oct. 20th and we are 65% sold out! Her beadwork is contemporary\, sleek\, colourful and for all! Most of their work is beadwoven using a beading loom\, the imagery they often work is very geometric using circles to represent moons. Space imagery such as the solar system and stars has more recently made it’s way into their beadwork. They also use the traditional Ceinture Flechee pattern and reinvent it to honour her metis culture and community. In 2022 St. Hilaire began loom beading practicing to make their own large-scale beaded Ceinture Fléchée which quickly blossomed into a deep love and obsession with beading and is now a part of her daily practice. They started this business as wearable art and expression of self and culture is very important to them. \nRegistration Information: \n$25 Supply Fee \n$125 Regular Registration (total fee $150) \n$115 MCML Discounted Registration (total fee $140)
