Pieces of Wood by Christopher Wood

July 5, 2019 - July 16, 2019

Artist Statement

This show is a very personal show. Every piece is a representation of my worries, ambitions and obsession with experimenting. While producing this body of work I tried experimenting with different styles, materials and techniques. I wanted this show to be unique, a true representation of my mind. I drew on a lot of inspiration from my favourite artists, my experience in graphic art, my experience growing up as a “graffiti kid” and my experience of practising fine art. What makes this show very personal is a lot of the pieces are influenced by my day to day thoughts and worries living with an anxiety disorder, being diagnosed with OCD and Tourette syndrome. I feel that each piece is a personal piece of my thought process, hence the title of the show “Pieces of Wood”.

Opening Reception & First Friday: July 5, 7-10pm

Exhibit Runs: July 6 to July 16

Christopher Wood is a self-taught artist born in Comox B.C and raised in Brandon MB. Growing up, Chris displayed a keen interest and talent for drawing. At age ten, he won his first drawing contest. Through junior high, Chris’s abilities were recognized by his teachers and was encouraged to pursue his interest in art in an academic setting. Around this time, Chris became interested in Graffiti writing and painting. Shunning fine art, Chris immersed himself in Graffiti Art and won second place in Brandon’s first (and only) Graffiti Arts Competition.

It was not until after high school, one of his teachers suggested that Chris paint one of his Graffiti pieces on canvass with brushes and sell it to him. This lead to Chris taking a night painting class through the local art gallery. He soon then started painting on canvasses with brushes and selling them in a local hair salon. Through this attention and his volunteer work with the local gallery, he was awarded a grant to pursue artistic studies in Brandon University’s newly created fine arts program and was awarded his first solo exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Western Manitoba. After completing his course at Brandon University, Chris decided to move to Winnipeg and focus on experimenting with his self teachings.

Since relocating, Chris has appeared in various group shows and has had solo exhibitions at various galleries throughout Winnipeg. Christopher likes to draw upon his experience as a graffiti artist, combined with commercial graphics, and elements of fine art in each of his pieces.
