Donna Besel’s Book Launch
November 18, 2021 at7:00 am - 8:30 pmFree
Join award-winning writers Donna Besel and Lauren Carter as they discuss Besel’s new book The Unravelling: Incest and the Destruction of a Family (University of Regina Press).
In her ground-breaking memoir, Donna Besel tells what happens after she and her sisters report their father’s crimes. With honesty and creativity, she describes the emotional and legal challenges that her family faced, after the abuse disclosures erupted at a sister’s wedding.
Donna Besel grew up at West Hawk Lake and her “boreal stories” have earned national recognition. When she’s not writing, she leads workshops for students of all ages. The forests of Eastern Manitoba, where she has always lived, provide endless ideas and settings.
Lauren Carter is a writer of fiction and poetry who has lived in Manitoba since 2013. Her last book, the novel This Has Nothing to Do with You, explored familial trauma and won the Margaret Laurence Award for Fiction.
Three times, Lauren and Donna have hosted a women writers’ retreat at Falcon Trails Resort in Whiteshell Provincial Park. Their candid conversation about The Unravelling will delve into Donna’s journey to overcome her traumatic past by becoming a storyteller and claiming her truth.
