May the Land Remember You As You Walk Upon Its Surface

February 1 - March 22

Land is not something that can be owned; land is animate and part of community. Along with food and shelter, the land grounds markers for stories and memories which contribute to cultural knowing. The separation from this significance, by force, coercion or otherwise, is a multi-layered personal rupture. Each artist in this exhibition uses beadwork to create new markers, objects that build relationality to the land in the past, present and future. By being in conversation with her grandmothers through material process, Boyer honours the fortitude of what they accomplished in the spaces they were given. Danger provides protection and empowerment for their LGBTQ2S kin, each mask being made through collective action. Usher and asinnajaq’s collective action honours one another and the generative properties of inter-connectivity. May the Land Remember You as You Walk Upon Its Surface sits with what it means to be in relation to the land and each other.
