Omaagomaan: Solo performance by Waawaate Fobister

September 12 - September 15

$15 – $20

Ozhichige Anishinaabe Dance Theatre launches with a new solo performance created by Theatre / Dance Artist Waawaate Fobister. This interdisciplinary production has been through four phases of development from it’s initial research, exploration to production spanning six-years. It has been supported, developed and showcased as work in development at Buddies in Bad Times (Toronto, ON); Banff Centre for the Arts (Banff. AB); Native Earth Performing Arts (Toronto, ON); Winnipeg Contemporary Dancers (Winnipeg, MB)

Performed by Dora-award winning performer Waawaate Fobister the show is a multi-genre exploration of ways to stitch a fractured landscape back together from the effects of mercury poisoning and clearcutting. Supported by a seasoned group of artists and designers Omaagomaan takes you on a journey of dance, storytelling, spectacle, surprise and a unique blend of original soundscapes and musical composition. Directed by: Blackfoot Dance Artist Troy Emery Twigg; Composition and Sound Design by Anishinaabe/Finnish Musician Marc Meriläinen; Costume Design by Dene Fashion Designer Sage Paul.

The Anishinaabe of Grassy Narrows are resilient. They are stitching their fractured landscapes back together from the impact of mercury poisoning. Using dance, movement, sound, and storytelling, Waawaate Fobister embodies Omaagomaan, a two-spirit being, and a manifestation of the earth and man-made poisons that have seeped into the earth’s crust. A fierce shape-shifter inspired by Anishinaabe cosmology, Omaagomaan forces us to reckon with the ways the maanaadizi (ugly) and the onizhishi (beautiful) collide.
