Sarah Gavron Directing Masterclass

December 17, 2020 at11:00 am - 12:30 pm

$5 – $15

The Winnipeg Film Group is honored to announce a Directing Masterclass with acclaimed female director Sarah Gavron (SuffragetteRocks).

In just a few features British independent director Sarah Gavron has established herself as one of the best female directors working in contemporary film. Her new British feature ROCKS has some of the best reviews of the year. “A wonderful mixture of joyous and uplifting moments of friendship, womanhood, and teenage life, yet always embracing the humanity… Rocks is a truly stunning piece of British cinema,” said Scott Davis, The People’s Movies.

She was influenced by directors such as Ken Loach, Mike Leigh and Terence Davies in her twenties. She pursued directing once she had seen films by women like Jane Campion, Mira Nair, Kathryn Bigelow, Claire Denis and Sally Potter. As a filmmaker, Sarah gravitates to stories that discuss class struggle, political upheaval and immigration through a feminist lens. Both consciousness and intuitive, Sarah is highly revered within her community and continues to mentor young filmmakers today.

In her 20 year as a director, Sarah has created 10 short films and 4 feature films that have screened internationally and earned many awards. Her feature debut, Brick Lane, received a BAFTA nomination and The Alfred Dunhill Talent Award at the London Film Festival. In 2013, her feature documentary, The Village at the End of the World, also won the prestigious Margaret Mead Award. By 2015, she directed Suffragette which starred Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep.

We are currently showing her critically acclaimed new feature, Rocks, available to rent from Cinematheque at Home from Nov. 20th to Dec. 23rd. Sarah Gavron graduated with a BA in English from University of York in 1992. After obtaining her MA in film studies from Edinburgh College of Art, she began her film career making BBC documentaries for three years. Sarah went on to study directing at the National Film and Television School in London with one of her teachers, Stephen Frears.

Sarah Gavron lives and works in London, UK.
