Spatial Audio in Virtual Reality

This workshop uses the Unity 3D game engine to spatialize 3D sound in virtual reality. The first hour of the workshop is focused on the basics of the Unity 3D user interface to ensure everyone can participate. Following that, we will learn about the Oculus Spatializer plugin which enables the spatialization of sound for virtual reality. Finally, we will explore animating the sound position and the properties of spatial sound like distance fall off, reverb, and environment reflections.
The tools and techniques learned in the 3D sound workshop can be applied to virtual sound installations and interactive sound designs. For artists who like to craft real-world sound installations, these techniques can be used to simulate fully realized art installation without the need for large setups or expensive equipment rentals. Finally, the Oculus Spatializer, which is the software we will learn, allows for up to fifty 3D sound sources in one project which opens up the sound canvas for artists to explore new ideas.

About the Instructor
Lesley is a director of virtual reality experiences and real-time animations. He has directed over a dozen apps and experiences and he has presented at Oculus Connect, the VR developer conference held by Facebook. Lesley co-founded Flipside XR, a VR animation company that has developed Flipside Studio, a real-time animation app that enables vTubers, animators, and creators to bring their animations to life.
