The Grand National Fibre Art & Quilt Exhibition: Still
July 3 - August 10free
Prairie Fusion Arts & Entertainment (www.prairiefusion.ca) will be showcasing The Grand National Fibre Art & Quilt Exhibition 2019: Still in our Main Gallery, July 3 to August 10, 2019. Prairie Fusion Arts & Entertainment is located in the William Glesby Centre at 11-2nd Street NE in Portage la Prairie.
The Grand National Fibre Art and Quilt Exhibition has been revamped and expanded. It is being hosted outside of Ontario for the first time. “This is a wonderful opportunity for Manitobans and specifically the people of Portage la Prairie and the RM of Portage la Prairie to experience this National exhibit”, says Krista Zeghers, Assistant Exhibition Coordinator. Future Grand National Fibre Art & Quilt Exhibitions will move to different Canadian sites every two years.
The Grand National Fibre Art and Quilt Exhibition first started as the Grand National Quilt Show in 2003 in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario. However in 2017, it was announced that the show would stop running. A group of western Canadian fibre artists decided to carry on the show. The show is now called The Grand National Fibre Art & Quilt Exhibition, which opens up the competition to other forms of fibre art while still maintaining a strong component of quilt art.
The name of this year’s exhibition is ‘Still’ to reflect that the exhibition is still going to continue. In addition, this stunning exhibit will feature works that explore the concept of what it means to be “still”. The exhibition features the work of the finalists who had to compete to be in this exhibition.
On Saturday, July 6 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. there will be an opening reception and awards ceremony. You will hear from some of the Grand National committee members as well as artists whose works are included in the fabulous display. Then on Sunday, July 7 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. there will be a digital ‘Trunk Show’ by textile artist, Kathy Tidswell of New Brunswick. These events are free and open to the public. We encourage everyone to visit and view this national exhibition of fibre art and quilts.
More information about the Grand National and all of their sponsors can be found on their website, grandnationalquiltshow.ca. This is the first time that the Grand National Exhibition will be hosted outside of Ontario.
