Debra Frances Plett

Biographical Info Debra Frances Plett is a Winnipeg based bookbinder and book artist. Her process, often collaborative, explores the power of design and material in reflecting the content of a book work. With a focus on bringing historical bindings to contemporary context, Debra is continually pushing boundaries with her innovative use of unusual materials. She has exhibited her work both nationally and internationally through Minnesota Center for Book Arts and Art of the Book, as well as locally in curated shows and group exhibitions. Notably, she is co-founder and sole bookbinder of the annual project Stone Diaries which brings together the work of ceramic artists across Canada and the US into one collaborative exhibition of hand bound ceramic books. She has recently received her Core Certificate of Book Arts from the MCBA in Minneapolis and is currently pursuing the Advanced Certificate specializing in historical bindings. Currently, two of Debra’s collaborative works are travelling across Canada as part of the Art of the Book Exhibition and will be on display at the Gallery CCFM at the end of August. Besides teaching locally here in Winnipeg, she is preparing to facilitate a bookbinding artist retreat on Malcolm Island, British Columbia this September.
