Join us with Knowledge Keeper Albert Mcleod as he takes us through the events, repercussions, and resistance that have faced Indigenous Peoples throughout history. Learn how we can access Indigenous teachings, protocols and knowledge systems to help us through our current crisis. COVID-19 isn't the first virus that Indigenous people have had to seek refuge from. This is about the interconnection of all things with an understanding of how humanity is a part of a greater ecosystem, not separate from it.⁣
⁣
Albert McLeod is a Status Indian with ancestry from Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation and the Metis community of Norway House in northern Manitoba. He has over thirty years of experience as a human rights activist and is one of the directors of the Two-Spirited People of Manitoba.⁣
Albert began his Two-Spirit advocacy in Winnipeg in 1986 and became an HIV/AIDS activist in 1987. He was the director of the Manitoba Aboriginal AIDS Task Force from 1991 to 2001. In 2018, Albert received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Winnipeg and received the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health (CAMIMH) 2019 Champions of Mental Health Award for Community (Individual).⁣
⁣
Albert lives in Winnipeg, where he works as a consultant specializing in Indigenous peoples, cultural reclamation, and cross-cultural training.⁣

Artist Taxes with RêveNew Practice Management will take place on Zoom on Wednesday, April 15, 2020, from 6 - 8 PM. Please register through creativemanitoba.ca (link in bio). 🗂️ As artists, it’s important to understand how taxation rules can work for you. In this 2-hour seminar participants will learn:
» What expenses are deductible and which are not
» Sole proprietorship vs partnership vs corporation
» The taxation rules related to each of the above
» GST
» Payroll (Deductions, T4, etc.)
» Lease vs buying decision
» How to defend against a CRA audit

Amid the chaos being caused by the COVID 19 Pandemic, Creative Manitoba offices and classrooms will be closed for the foreseeable future. All of our upcoming in-person programming will be delivered online or has been postponed. If you are registered for an event or class, please check your email for updates and instructions.⁣

All Group Mentorship in-person sessions are suspended until further notice. Lead mentors will contact participants with further instructions regarding remote (online) programming and communication.⁣

Julie Gendron, multi-disciplinary artist and conference coordinator and art director for the Merging Mindsets Conference happening this weekend, March 13&14. We talk to Julie about some og digital art projects and collectives around Canada including Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver, and how she is trying to bridge the digital art gap to Winnipeg. We had no idea what "digital art" really means so Julie walked us through it and told us about some of the conference panels that are so interesting!!! You should try and check it out, we will see you there!

From her experience designing projects for stage production, museums, events, and architectural installations, Mary has developed a unique strategic toolkit for leading interdisciplinary projects.

The Merging Mindsets Conference will feature an incredible Installation Showcase highlighting how artists are using tech.
We are thrilled to have Faisal Anwar @faisalanwarstudio return to exhibit his piece CharBagh! ‘CharBagh’ (quadrilateral garden) is a participatory digital art project by new-media artist Faisal Anwar creating ornate geometric patterns through conversations in real time. Modelled on the traditional grid compositions of Persian gardens, each pattern grows and shifts in response to data generated on social media and collected by the artist. The first time presented in 2015 on the façade of the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, Anwar’s project encourages the public to meaningfully participate in online conversation in order to empower social change. Last year the work was part of the exhibition titled Garden in the Machine, at the Surrey Art Gallery, where Anwar led focused workshops with community groups discussing themes related to sustainable food production, climate change, and peoples' changing relationships with nature.

In the installation, the structured Islamic geometrical scheme becomes a powerful metaphor working with open data and investigating today’s sociopolitical territories. The data is collected using Instagram through thematically curated hashtags to generate a conversation about climate crises in our cities and and are relation to it. Using creative coding, algorithms, the artist morphs these photos into ornate geometric designs. This project exemplifies how social media can be a tool for positive social change.
