If you are a self-employed artist or looking to increase the portion of your employment derived from your art, this course is for you!
The Art of Managing Your Career is for working artists to gain the confidence and knowledge to successfully manage their careers in the cultural sector, developing an extensive business plan, marketing plan, and template for managing finances.
*Please note: Due to the pandemic, The Art of Managing Your Career will only be delivered online via Google Classroom in 2021.*
Fall session: Weekly meetings: Tuesdays September 14 to October 26, 2021 – 6-8pm
The Fall AMYC Online Cohort is closed for applications.
Course participants will be expected to:
- Watch and read 6 online modules
- Attend 7 weekly meetings
- Complete weekly writing tasks
- Participate in group activities during the sessions
- Commit to participating in the peer learning network that will be established during the course
- Become a member of Creative Manitoba
- Participate in program evaluation sessions
IMPORTANT NOTE: The course will be limited to a maximum of 15 participants drawn from across all artistic disciplines and therefore space is extremely limited.
Price: $200 – The cost of this course per artist is $1000 with 80% subsidized by Creative Manitoba’s funders. Each artist is required to pay the remaining $200 of their fee (payment plans available upon request). A limited number of completely subsidized spots are made available to equity-seeking artists.
The course material has been designed at a college/university level and is applicable to artists from all disciplines including actors, craftspeople, dancers, filmmakers, musicians, new media content creators, visual artists and writers.
The course begins by exploring the attitudes and behaviours that may make it difficult for artists to recognize their transferable skills. It then builds components of a business plan and other self-promotion tools. A peer learning network is established to support the participants once the workshop has been completed.
By the end of this course, you will have developed an extensive business plan, a marketing plan, and have a template for managing your finances, all while pursuing your artistic dreams!

Testimonials

“Since taking AMYC, I have had to put my two side-jobs on hold while I work constantly overlapping paid dance projects (self initiated and hired by others). Heather Bishop is an absolute master.” – Alexandra Elliott, Dancer and Choreographer

“The biggest takeaways for me was tackling my artist statement and meeting other artists who were facing the same fears and challenges. It made me feel less alone and that I could take control of my situation.” – Elena Anciro, Professional Actor

“AMYC was the catalyst that pushed me forward and encouraged me to establish myself as an artist. Initially it provided me with a safe community of other artists where I was able to explore many aspects of what it is to live as an artist. Beyond that – it provided me with the tools to establish my self both artistically AND as a business. I am constantly referring back to my notes from the course and I continue to connect with the other artists who were in the course with me. It has led to many meaningful collaborations as well.” – Debbie Plett, Book Binder
