SUMMARY:Building Your Artist Bundle: Session 1 - Asemaa
DESCRIPTION:Urban Art Biz – Building Your Artist Bundle is a series of four workshops to help Indigenous Artists prepare a fully realized grant application in time for the spring 2027 funding deadlines. Our goal is to walk you through each step of the grant application process to help you increase your chances of securing funding for your project. \nThis workshop will be held IN PERSON. \nOur first session – Asemaa (Tobacco) will introduce you to funding opportunities and discovering where you can ask for support for your artistic vision. \nTobacco\, or asemaa\, is known as the first medicine that the Creator gave to the Anishinaabe people. It is used for smudging and offered as a gesture of reverence in almost every aspect of life. This sacred herb is a conduit for communicating with the spirit world\, a medium through which thoughts and feelings are conveyed. When tobacco is offered\, prayers are shared not only for oneself but also for family\, relatives\, and the collective community. In most Anishinaabe teachings\, tobacco sits in the eastern doorway\, which signifies new beginnings\, as the sun rises in the east. Asemaa is a medicine of gratitude\, humility\, and offered as a gift of respect when seeking guidance\, teachings\, or requests for help.  \nEach of our four workshops will be led by an established Indigenous Artist or Relational Maker. \nSession 1 Asemaa Topics Covered: \n\nResearching Available Grants\nExploring grant guidelines\nPreparing your Artist CV\nCreating an Artist profile on funders’ profiles.\n\nWe ask that you bring: \n\n A laptop\, a tablet\, something for you to take notes on.\n A version of your artist resume – it can just be in note formation\n An idea for an artistic project you want funding for\n\nFor those new to the granting world\, we will guide you through the maze of funding opportunities to help you find which grant is right for your project. We will help you prepare your artist CV to highlight your skills and experience. We will help you create an artist profile on the funders’ websites/portals so that you will be able to apply for a grant. For those who are a bit more familiar\, we hope to expand your knowledge and help you create a more defined vision for your project. \nLight refreshments will be offered. \nMAXIMUM 20 participants. \nUrban Art Biz is a series of workshops focused on the business side of art from an Indigenous perspective. Urban Art Biz was developed by Creative Manitoba’s Indigenous Programs and is presented in partnership with Urban Shaman Contemporary Indigenous Art Gallery. \nFor information on all sessions in Urban Art Biz – Building Your Artist Bundle series\, click here. \nWorkshops will be held IN PERSON at Creative Manitoba. SUMMARY:Building Your Artist Bundle: Session 2 - Wiinggashk
DESCRIPTION:Urban Art Biz- Building Your Artist Bundle is a series of four workshops to help Indigenous Artists prepare a fully realized grant application in time for the spring 2027 funding deadlines. Our goal is to walk you through each step of the grant application process to help you increase your chances of securing funding for your project. \nThis workshop will be held IN PERSON. \nOur second session – Wiinggashk (Sweetgrass) will delve into the heart of your application\, the thoughts and words of your project description \nSweetgrass\, or wiinggashk\, represents kindness and healing. It is known for its gentle scent and reminds people of the importance of good thoughts\, words\, and actions. Sweetgrass usually sits in the southern doorway\, although in some teachings it sits in the north. The southern doorway represents summer\, a time of warmth\, growth\, and life. It is considered a grounding medicine that brings calmness. Sweetgrass is often called the hair of Mother Earth. This teaching reminds us that sweetgrass should be handled with gentleness and care. When harvesting sweetgrass\, it is important to be gentle and mindful\, taking only what is needed. There are different ways to braid sweetgrass\, but one traditional method uses 21 strands divided into three sets of seven before braiding. The number seven holds deep meaning in Anishinaabe culture. It is connected to the Seven Generations before us\, the Seven Grandfather Teachings\, and the Seven Generations ahead. The three strands can also represent the mind\, body\, and spirit\, or- in some teachings- love\, kindness\, and honesty. \nEach of our four workshops will be led by an established Indigenous Artist or Relational Maker. \nSATURDAY\, JANUARY 23\, 2027   1 – 3:30 PM   – Wiinggashk (Sweetgrass) – Thoughts and Words  \n\nProject Description – Who are you?  \nWhat do you want to create?\nWhen and where will this happen?\nWho is involved in the project?\nHow will you create this project?\nWhy is this project relevant?\nWhat artistic impact will this project have for you?\n\nWe ask that you bring: \n\nA laptop\, a tablet\, something for you to take notes on.\nThe concept or idea you have for your project.\nAny relevant information that might be useful in crafting your project description\n\nWriting about your project can be challenging. You have an idea of what you want to do\, you can see a vision of it in your head\, you can talk with great passion about the process you hope to undertake to make your vision a reality\, BUT how do you translate all that information into a concise\, descriptive\, well-thought out and engaging Project Description in 1500 characters or 750 words? This is the heart of every grant application\, and we want to help you create a description worthy of funding. \nLight refreshments will be offered. \nMAXIMUM 20 participants. \nUrban Art Biz is a series of workshops focused on the business side of art from an Indigenous perspective. SUMMARY:Building Your Artist Bundle: Session 3 - Giizhik
\nOur third session – Giizhik (Cedar) – Respect and Honour – will help you figure out all the financial aspects\, devise a timeline for your proposed project\, and make sure you are doing things in a good way.  \nCedar\, or giizhik\, offers protection and healing. It is a strong medicine used in purification ceremonies\, for protecting your space\, and can be used in teas.  In Anishinaabe teachings\, cedar sits in the northern doorway. The north is connected to winter\, rest\, our Elders\, and wisdom. The most important protocol with cedar is respect. People should never over-harvest and should avoid taking pieces larger than the size of their hand. When harvesting cedar\, it is important to take only small amounts\, to offer thanks\, and to acknowledge the spirit of the tree. Giizhik teaches respect and reminds us to protect life and to honour the sacredness of all living things.  \nEach of our four workshops will be led by an established Indigenous Artist or Relational Maker. \nSATURDAY\, FEBRUARY 27\, 2027  1 – 3:30 PM  Giizhik (Cedar) – Respect and Honour \n\nProject Timeline – Steps involved in the project\, dates\, dissemination\nBudgeting – Materials\, equipment\, travel\, living expenses\, crew\, Elder fees\, etc.\nCommunity Accountability – What impact will this project have within the community?\n\nWe ask that you bring: \n1. A laptop\, a tablet\, something for you to take notes on\n2. Your completed project description from session 2\n3. Any relevant information that might be useful in crafting your project description \nOnce we have refined the vision for our project\, defined the parameters and logistics\, we need to create an achievable timeline\, and realistic budget. What should go into your budget? Can you ask for living expenses? And how much? How much will your materials cost? are you renting space? What is the rate of pay for technicians or helpers? how do you determine payment or gifts for Elders and knowledge keepers? If you are travelling\, what expenses can be put into the budget? What is Per Diem? Can you put the purchase of hard goods in your budget\, like tools\, sewing machines\, or a laptop? There’s a lot to consider and a lot to take in account. Community accountability is also a question that appears on grant applications. How will the outcome of your project affect the community? Do you have all permissions required? Are you doing things in a good way? \nLight refreshments will be offered. \nMAXIMUM 20 participants. \nUrban Art Biz is a series of workshops focused on the business side of art from an Indigenous perspective. SUMMARY:Building Your Artist Bundle: Session 4 - Mashkodewashk
\nOur fourth session – Mashkodewashk (Sage) – Resilience and Renewal\, is a look at the materials you will submit to support your grant application\, the criteria the funders look for\, and a final read through of your project to make sure everything you want and need to say is included.  \nSage\, or mashkodewashk\, is a medicine used for cleansing and purification. It helps remove negative energy\, thoughts\, and emotions\, and brings renewal and balance to the spirit. In Anishinaabe teachings\, sage sits in the western doorway. The west is where the sun sets and is connected to the autumn season. Sage helps people cleanse with goodness and release what is no longer needed\, purifying the mind\, body\, and spirit. Bundling sage is both a physical and spiritual act. It involves giving thanks to the plant\, leaving some behind to regrow\, and recognizing the humility that comes with receiving gifts from the land. There are many types of sage\, and each community or region may have its own preferred variety. Sage is a medicine of resilience and renewal that teaches people to approach life and ceremony with a clean heart and mind. \nEach of our four workshops will be led by an established Indigenous Artist or Relational Maker. \nSATURDAY\, MARCH 13\, 2027 1 – 3:30 PM  Mashkodewashk (Sage) – Resilience and Renewal \n\nSupporting Material – Maximum amount of samples\, formats\, labelling\, uploading.\nFinal once-over – Checking word counts\, spelling\, grammar\nEvaluation Criteria – Artistic merit\, relevance\, feasibility\n\nWe ask that you bring: \n1. A laptop\, a tablet\, something for you to take notes on \n2. Samples of your work for supporting material \n3. Any relevant information that might be useful for the finishing touches on your application \nOnce the bulk of your application is complete\, you will need to submit supporting material as evidence that prove your artistic skill samples of current work that are either relevant to your grant application or help give context for your grant application. They can include digital images\, video clips\, audio tracks\, writing samples\, scripts\, or music scores of past or current work. Supporting documents can include reviews from past shows\, letters of support\, project contracts\, resumes from collaborators. It’s important to submit quality over quantity. We’ll look at the formats for each type of supporting material from differing funding bodies and help you choose relevant material. We’ll also discuss how the jury of peers for funding bodies work\, what they are looking for\, and what to do if you don’t receive a grant. \nLight refreshments will be offered. \nMAXIMUM 20 participants. \nUrban Art Biz is a series of workshops focused on the business side of art from an Indigenous perspective.
