Collections Assistant (YCW)

1.  General:

The Department of Collections and Conservation is responsible for the overall management of the Museum’s human and natural history collections along with the institutional library, archive and records management. Collections and Conservation Staff complete the required documentation, take on the physical care of, and provide access to the Museum’s collections in storage and on exhibition.

2. Typical Duties:

Reporting to the Curator of History, the incumbent will assist with the ongoing upgrade of collections and conservation record keeping systems at the Manitoba Museum which will entail cataloguing artifacts, completing condition reports, carrying out inventories, and entering information into the collections database. Additionally, the incumbent will assist with preventive conservation tasks related to maintaining collections in the galleries and in storage.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

1.  Education, Training and Experience

  1. Preferred University or College education in: Museum Studies, Humanities (History, Canadian Studies, Anthropology, Art History, Fine Arts), or Information Management
  2. Experience working with artifacts or archival holdings is desirable
  3. Computer proficiency, including MS Word, Excel, and databases is preferred
  4. Proficiency with digital camera is desirable
  5. Proficiency in spoken and written English is essential
  6. Positive teamwork experience, self-motivation, and organizational ability is desirable
  7. Strong interest in Manitoba’s human history and First Aid/CPR training are assets
  8. Due to the nature of the work and workplace, the successful candidate must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 18 kilograms.
