Founded in 1986, the National Screen Institute is Canada’s most established national training organization for storytellers, supporting writers, directors, producers and digital creators through industry-informed mentorship, immersive workshops and business labs.

Based in Winnipeg, the institute has delivered market-driven training to more than 2,100 creators, contributing to over 1,900 projects.

About the role

The communications coordinator is responsible for day-to-day communications execution, ensuring materials are clear, accurate and aligned with organizational priorities and standards. An important part of the role is contributing to the tracking and reporting of communications, participant and program-related data to support evaluation, reporting and organizational learning.

This position is well suited to a highly organized, concise writer with experience producing clear, audience-focused communications. The role requires strong attention to detail and the ability to work effectively within established style, messaging, approval and reporting frameworks, as well as comfort working collaboratively to improve systems over time.

Key responsibilities

Communications and media

  • Plan and implement communications activities to promote training programs to potential applicants, outreach initiatives and application calls.
  • Plan, write and schedule social media content across platforms, maintaining an active and consistent presence.
  • Manage media relations including drafting and distributing media releases, responding to enquiries, coordinating interviews and tracking coverage.
  • Draft and format content for WordPress, Mailchimp, reports, fundraising materials, proposals and promotional materials, ensuring clarity, consistency and adherence to established style and accessibility standards.
  • Track, analyze and report on digital performance, including website traffic, social media engagement and email campaigns, and prepare quarterly summaries for internal and funder reporting.
  • Apply the institute’s voice, tone, style and accessibility standards across all communications.

Outreach, engagement and events

  • Lead outreach activities related to program promotion, participant announcements and application calls, working with program staff and leadership as needed.
  • Maintain contact lists and outreach records related to participants, alumni, mentors, partners and media.
  • Coordinate virtual and in-person events, as needed, including logistics, invitations and follow-up communications.

Data, design and collaboration

  • Work with the operations administrator and manager of programs and partner support to track, maintain and report on communications, program and other organizational metrics.
  • Oversee the layout and visual consistency of communications materials, presentations and promotional assets including Canva, PowerPoint and Google Slides.
  • Compile alumni news and media mentions to support reporting, evaluation and organizational storytelling.
  • Ensure appropriate recognition of sponsors and supporters across all materials.

Qualifications and experience

Required

  • Experience in communications, marketing, outreach or a related field
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear, concise communications
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills, with attention to accuracy and tone
  • Comfort working with websites, social media platforms and digital tools
  • Experience tracking, maintaining or contributing to reporting and analysis of communications, programming or organizational data
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Sound judgement and the ability to work independently while collaborating with others

Preferred

  • Experience in the arts, cultural or non-profit sector
  • Familiarity with equity-deserving communities and inclusive communications practices
  • Strong visual judgement and an eye for layout, hierarchy and presentation
  • Experience supporting events, outreach initiatives or fundraising campaigns

Work arrangement and hours

This is a full-time position based in Winnipeg. The National Screen Institute operates on a four-day work week, Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with a hybrid work environment and in-office days agreed in advance.
