About the role:

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is centred around the idea that respect and understanding of human rights can serve as a positive force for change in the world. The Event Assistant will support our collective efforts to build a workplace culture that is inclusive, equitable, innovative and focused on inspiring action.

Reporting to the Manager, Special Events, the Event Assistant will be a key member of the Special Events team by supporting and executing the onsite events of the CMHR. They will greet, welcome and assist guests with event needs and questions, do AV and room setup and teardown of event equipment, and provide administrative assistance to team members as needed.  

The incumbent will be a strong and thoughtful communicator, critical thinker and innovator, and will bring a collaborative approach to their role.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Contribute to a culture that promotes respect, equity, inclusion and innovation, and models anti-racist and accountable behaviours.
  • Work with the team on event setup and equipment teardown.
  • Act as a key point of contact during events as required. Provide event guests with general information concerning services, wayfinding, event information and Museum information.
  • Assist guests in troubleshooting basic AV equipment and connecting basic systems.
  • Support the Events team by ensuring that requirements and expectations for events are met.
  • Ensure the security of the event guests and Museum property, and assist with evacuation procedures in the event of an emergency.
  • Assist with administrative tasks by updating calendars, binders and bulletins, scanning, filing and adding/updating information into the event system.   
  • Conduct inspections of event facility equipment; work on inventory, tag out broken equipment and maintain storeroom tidiness.
  • Maintain a safe environment, including but not limited to fire safety protocols, and act as a first point of contact to escalate security matters to the appropriate staff member.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What we’re looking for:

  • Minimum of 6 months to 1 year of experience working in customer service, with a preference of experience working in public events in a guest-facing role
  • Commitment to human rights principles, including respect, equity, inclusion and dignity for all
  • Demonstrated ability to work with computer systems such as Outlook and event software
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment
  • Ability to be courteous and attentive to guests with a strong customer service attitude
  • Good oral and written communication skills, demonstrated ability to read and interpret floor plans and banquet event orders
  • High level of attention to detail, with the ability to remain calm and unbiased

Desired qualifications:

  • Experience working with AV equipment
  • Knowledge of general security practices
  • Ability to communicate proficiently in both official languages and additional languages
  • Relevant and similar experience in a related organization or industry (e.g., museum or other not-for-profit organization or tourism/hospitality industry)
  • Experience working with public events and being the site client point of contact
  • Experience in working with floorplans

Official language proficiency:

English essential, French preferred.

This position may have to handle requests and understand simple requests in French from members of the public.

While preference will be given to candidates who speak French, we welcome applications from all interested candidates.

Other:

  • Availability to work weekdays, weekends, evenings and holidays
  • Requires lifting, carrying and moving tables, stage pieces, chairs, benches, etc., up to 50 pounds (22.6 kg)
  • Ability to move and stack chairs and tables, and use a dolly or trolley
  • A considerable amount of standing and walking is required, and the ability to remain stationed in one area.
  • Work is in an open public environment.
  • Work is in a high sensory environment (video screens, sounds/music).
