Beading Métis Resurgence

January 28 at 12:00 am

Winnipeg, MB – Gallery 1C03, the campus art gallery of the University of Winnipeg, is pleased to present Beading Métis Resurgence, an exhibition and robust series of free public events or “activations” that expand the practice of and critical discourse around contemporary Red River Métis beadwork, an artform that until recently has not received due regard. Featured artists are Jennine Krauchi, David Heinrichs, Vi Houssin, Claire Johnston and Brianna Oversby. This exhibition honours Krauchi’s legacy as a matriarch who has guided the resurgence of Métis beadwork by creating magnificent pieces seen in national and international museums and exhibits. It also makes evident her intergenerational mentorship and collaboration with remarkable bead workers Heinrichs, Houssin, Johnston and Oversby. Together, these five brilliant makers honour Métis cultural icons and Michif knowledge systems while forging new artistic trajectories.

Curated by Gallery 1C03 Director/Curator Jennifer Gibson and University of Winnipeg Associate Professor of History, Dr. Cathy Mattes.
