Urban Art Biz- Building Your Artist Bundle is a series of four workshops to help Indigenous Artists prepare a fully realized grant application in time for the spring 2027 funding deadlines. Our goal is to walk you through each step of the grant application process to help you increase your chances of securing funding for your project.
This workshop will be held IN PERSON.
Our third session – Giizhik (Cedar) – Respect and Honour – will help you figure out all the financial aspects, devise a timeline for your proposed project, and make sure you are doing things in a good way.
Cedar, or giizhik, offers protection and healing. It is a strong medicine used in purification ceremonies, for protecting your space, and can be used in teas. In Anishinaabe teachings, cedar sits in the northern doorway. The north is connected to winter, rest, our Elders, and wisdom. The most important protocol with cedar is respect. People should never over-harvest and should avoid taking pieces larger than the size of their hand. When harvesting cedar, it is important to take only small amounts, to offer thanks, and to acknowledge the spirit of the tree. Giizhik teaches respect and reminds us to protect life and to honour the sacredness of all living things.
Each of our four workshops will be led by an established Indigenous Artist or Relational Maker.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2027 1 – 3:30 PM Giizhik (Cedar) – Respect and Honour
- Project Timeline – Steps involved in the project, dates, dissemination
- Budgeting – Materials, equipment, travel, living expenses, crew, Elder fees, etc.
- Community Accountability – What impact will this project have within the community?
We ask that you bring:
1. A laptop, a tablet, something for you to take notes on
2. Your completed project description from session 2
3. Any relevant information that might be useful in crafting your project description
Once we have refined the vision for our project, defined the parameters and logistics, we need to create an achievable timeline, and realistic budget. What should go into your budget? Can you ask for living expenses? And how much? How much will your materials cost? are you renting space? What is the rate of pay for technicians or helpers? how do you determine payment or gifts for Elders and knowledge keepers? If you are travelling, what expenses can be put into the budget? What is Per Diem? Can you put the purchase of hard goods in your budget, like tools, sewing machines, or a laptop? There’s a lot to consider and a lot to take in account. Community accountability is also a question that appears on grant applications. How will the outcome of your project affect the community? Do you have all permissions required? Are you doing things in a good way?
Light refreshments will be offered.
MAXIMUM 20 participants.
