David A. Robertson is a two-time Governor General’s Literary Award winner and has won the TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award and the Writers’ Union of Canada Freedom to Read Award. He has received several other accolades for his work as a writer for children and adults, podcaster, public speaker, and social advocate. He was honoured with a Doctor of Letters from the University of Manitoba in 2023 and a Doctor of Laws from the University of Lethbridge in 2025. He is a member of Norway House Cree Nation and lives in Winnipeg.

Jacques St. Goddard is a Métis artist, event planner, arts advocate, cultural speaker, entrepreneur, and founder/CEO of Winnipeg’s Canadian Plains Gallery, which he has been running for over 30 years. Throughout his career, Jacques has empowered hundreds of Indigenous artists through portfolio development, providing gallery space, and boosting Indigenous culture globally.  The gallery recently moved into a larger space in the Exchange District at B1-290 Mcdermot Ave, allowing it to support the careers and accommodate the burgeoning roster of Indigenous artists. The enlarged space of Canadian Plains Gallery allows Jacques to do what he does best: bring people together. Jacques has expanded the galleries repertoire by hosting workshops, live music events, First Friday Gallery openings, and Red City Voices, evenings of sharing Indigenous stories and poetry with Indigenous writers. Jacques has significant international experience, having participated in trade missions to Brazil, Germany and the United States to promote Indigenous culture. He is currently the Board Chair, for Aboriginal Health and Wellness Centre of Winnipeg

David McLeod, a member of Minegoziibe Anishinabe (Pine Creek First Nation, MB), is the CEO of Native Communications Incorporated (NCI). Under his leadership, NCI operates a provincial FM radio network with 57 transmitters spanning from Winnipeg to Churchill. With a team of 17 staff, it is one of the largest Indigenous radio networks in Canada, featuring programming in Indigenous languages. 

David studied broadcasting at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in Calgary and television production at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto. Throughout his career, he has worked extensively in both television and radio as a producer, writer, reporter and talk show host. 

David has been a strong advocate for Indigenous music. In 2000, he played a key role in launching the Indigenous Music Countdown (IMC), which went on to win awards at the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards and the Indigenous Music Awards. Now celebrating over a decade on SiriusXM, the IMC is syndicated across Canada and the U.S. David was also instrumental in establishing some of the first Indigenous music playlists on SiriusXM and Stingray Music. His contributions extend to television, with work on the soundtracks for Little Bird and Acting Good. Additionally, he remains actively involved in Indigenous music programming at the National Music Centre in Calgary, AB.

Canadian Plains Gallery is an agency that promotes the highest quality art of Manitoba’s premiere Indigenous Artists. Cree, Michif,  Ojibwe, Dene, Inuktitut,  Dakota, Ojibwe-Cree. A wide selection of quality and cultural gifts for yourself or for others. The mediums consist of paintings, carvings, sculptures, original jewelry, stone painting, caribou hair tufting, porcupine quill work, talking sticks, beadwork, pottery, wood burning, birch bark biting, flutes, photography, prints and art cards. Artists are available for workshops, murals, commissions and logos. We are also provide professional photography services and entertainment coordinating.

Winter is for storytelling. RED CITY VOICES is a space for Indigenous poetry and storytelling, it’s an open mic gathering planned for Wednesday, February 25th,
Special guest David A. Robertson, a Cree author, editor, and storyteller based in Winnipeg, MB (Treaty No. 1 Territory), and a member of Norway House Cree Nation.
Over the past two decades, David has become an influential Indigenous literary voice, publishing award-winning work across children’s literature, young adult fantasy, graphic novels, and a memoir. He’s achieved over 30 literary works published to date.
“My work as a Cree writer is rooted in the belief that stories carry power: the power to heal, to teach, to connect, and to imagine new futures.”
His books include the novel The Theory of Crows, the memoir Black Water, the picture books When We Were Alone and On the Trapline. He has won awards such as the TD Canadian Children’s Literary Award, the Alexander Kennedy Isbister Award for Non-Fiction, the Carol Shields Winnipeg Book Award and the Governor General’s Literary Award.
David’s writing has explored Cree identity, intergenerational healing, and the legacy of residential schools, grounding narratives in cultural knowledge and community experience. Beyond his writing, he serves as an editor and advocate for emerging Indigenous creators, helping expand space for Indigenous voices in print.
RED CITY VOICES welcomes curent and up-incoming Indigenous writers as part of the gathering, please note, the open mic is limited to 5min. to allow others to share within our designated schedule, there is also a writing exercise for everyone in attendance who would like to participate : )
