The West End Cultural Centre is a dynamic and innovative not-for-profit charity that focuses on bringing artists and audiences together to share in the creative experience.

Position Overview

The Executive Director executes the organization’s mission, strategic vision and anti-racism/anti-oppression mandate, while overseeing day-to-day operations, finances, and organizational initiatives. This role balances administrative leadership with support for creative programming, ensuring the WECC remains financially sustainable, artistically vibrant, and deeply connected to its community. The Executive Director works closely with the Artistic Director, Technical Director, Rentals & Front of House Coordinator, Marketing & Operations Coordinator, Community & Volunteer Coordinator, and other contracted staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership
    • Supports the board in strategic planning
    • Manages all capital, physical, and financial assets of the organization.
    • Acts as the public face of the WECC with funders, partners, and community groups.
  • Financial Oversight
    • Responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the organization, which can include:
      • Financial and tax reporting and forecasting
      • Budget preparation and reporting
      • Works with the Board Treasurer and Finance Committee
      • Board reporting
      • Day-to-day financial tasks (ex. Payroll, payments)
    • Works with the Board Treasurer and Finance Committee to ensure transparent and accurate financial reporting.
  • Grant Writing & Fund Development
    • Leads the preparation and submission of grant applications, reports, and other funding-related materials.
    • Leads general operational and capital fundraising initiatives in collaboration with the Board of Directors.
    • Leads revenue generation initiatives through fundraising, sponsorship development, ticket sales strategy, marketing, and financial forecasting.
    • Seeks and secures new funding sources, sponsorships, and earned revenue opportunities.
    • Tracks funding deadlines, reporting requirements, and grant deliverables.
    • Coordinates the fundraising activity calendar with the Artistic Director to align with seasonal ebbs in programming.

 

  • Operations & Administration
    • Manages the daily operations of the venue and organization.
    • Maintains staff scheduling, including weekly schedule checks, vacation planning, and ensuring all events are adequately staffed with support from the Community & Volunteer Coordinator.
    • Ensures office coverage and phone answering are maintained at all times.
    • Oversees the weekly and monthly calendar, ensuring room changeovers are executed with support from the Rentals & Front of House Coordinator.
  • Human Resource Management
    • Leading personnel management, including hiring, disciplining and firing
    • Leading informal and formal performance reviews of their team.
    • Onboarding and training staff
    • Tracking vacation, sick leave, paid time off, leaves of absences in accordance with standard labour laws and organizational policies.
    • Maintaining confidential personnel files
    • Liasing regularly with the all staff to align on organizational priorities.
    • Fostering a culture that recognizes, values, and supports the contributions of volunteers as essential partners in achieving the organization’s mission.
  • Facilities & Building Maintenance
    • Leads building maintenance planning and oversight, including alarm management, insurance, vendor relationships, and capital repairs.
    • Ensures the organization’s facilities remain compliant with applicable building codes and safety regulations, and maintains, reviews, and updates all building safety policies, procedures, and emergency response plans.
  • Risk Management
    • Oversees comprehensive organizational risk management, regulatory compliance, and emergency preparedness while reporting key mitigation strategies directly to the Board of Directors.
    • Develops, implements, and regularly reviews organizational risk management policies and procedures.
    • Identifies and mitigates operational, financial, legal, and reputational risks.

Hours

35hrs/week, some evenings and weekends required

Salary & Compensation

Starting salary of $70,000 annually, with flexibility to negotiate based on the successful candidate’s experience, skills, and qualifications. The position includes a minimum of two weeks’ paid vacation and a benefits package.

Required Qualifications

 

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in the arts, nonprofit, cultural, or charitable sector, or in a comparable management role.
  • Experience overseeing organizational finances, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Experience securing and administering grants, fundraising initiatives, or other revenue-generating activities.
  • Strong people management skills, including supervising staff, providing mentorship, and fostering a healthy workplace culture.
  • Experience working collaboratively with a Board of Directors, committees, funders, and community partners.
  • Excellent organizational, project management, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt within a fast-paced, event-driven environment.
  • A demonstrated commitment to equity, accessibility, anti-racism, and anti-oppressive leadership.

 

Assets

 

  • Knowledge of Manitoba’s arts and live music sector.
  • Experience managing a performing arts venue, festival, or other cultural organization.
  • Experience with sponsorship development, donor stewardship, and earned revenue strategies.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit governance and charitable organizations.
  • Experience overseeing facilities, capital projects, or venue operations.
  • Knowledge of labour standards, workplace health and safety, and organizational risk management.
  • Experience with Quickbooks accounting software and Microsoft Office products (i.e. Excel).
