What is Copyright?

You've probably heard about copyright, but how do you apply it to your arts business? Time for a little primer!

Copyright is the exclusive legal right to use, produce, reproduce, publish, or perform an original literary, artistic, musical or dramatic work. You have full control over who can use your work, how it is used, and on what terms. Copyright is a type of IP, along with trademarks, patents, industrial designs, and trade secrets.

^ The information above was created by students from the Manitoba Legal Clinic for the Arts, it is not legal advice nor does it create a solicitor-client relationship. The Clinic provides information and services entirely for free. Why? To support artists doing what they do best– creating– which makes the world a better place for everyone! If you need legal assistance, please fill out an intake form at legalclinicforthearts.ca
