The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba (ASM) is looking to connect with a local artist who is willing and interested in sharing their art and art story with participants at one of our upcoming programs, the Memory Cafe.
We are running one session of the Memory Cafe program in June that will run Friday mornings and one in July that will run Tuesday afternoons.
Memory Cafes serve as safe, welcoming, and inclusive spaces for people in the dementia-community to gather with others with similar lived experiences. They often include creative outlets such as music, poetry, history, and art. The first 45 minutes of the program offers refreshments and an opportunity to socialize, while the second 45 minutes includes a visit from a special guest to share their passion or area of expertise. Participants include people living with mild-to-moderate signs of dementia and their care partners. There will be 2-4 facilitators/volunteers to lead and support the group each week. We are expecting around 8 – 10 participants for each session.
We are looking for a willing and interested artist to join us for one June session date and one July session date to share about how they got into art, share some of their art pieces, and run the group through some art techniques (if possible).
We are a non-profit organization and there is no fee for participants to attend so we are hoping to get local people to donate their time, but if people require payment or are travelling from far away, we have some funds to work with.
We also prefer if special guests have some basic knowledge about dementia and positive interaction approaches and they feel comfortable in this setting. We usually send out some resources and additional points to be mindful of if special guests are joining us.
Here are the dates we are currently still looking to fill:
- Friday, June 5th 10 – 11:30am
- Friday, June 26th 10 – 11:30am
- Tuesday, July 28th 1:30 – 3:00pm
