When exploring a new facet of one's creativity, it helps to have a seasoned professional along for the ride with good advice and encouragement. Scriptwriters Anna Schaible-Schur and Rick Chafe recently participated in the Professional Mentorship Program and shared their experience here!

Chris Foster

Chris Foster creates semi-representational landscape and flower paintings in oil, acrylic and watercolour that use expressive colour and light … sprinkled with a touch of whimsy.

Chris has always been an admirer of the brushstrokes and techniques of Chinese/Japanese art and will often incorporate some line work influenced by those cultures. A more recent discovery has been creating collage and mixed media pieces....again embracing line work and shapes.

Growing up on the Canadian prairies -Chris now spends 5 months every year in the beauty of the forests and lakes of the Canadian Shield. This has provided her with landscapes that offer a kaleidoscope of colour and amazing light which provide never ending inspiration. This home turf coupled by some amazing cultural world trips have become her painting catalogue.

Nora Decter

Nora Decter is a writer and educator who grew up on Treaty 1 Territory in the North End of Winnipeg. She is the author of two novels: How Far We Go and How Fast (Orca Book Publishers, 2018) and What's Not Mine (ECW Press, 2024). In 2019 she was the recipient of the Kobo Emerging Writer Prize in literary fiction.

Nora has been teaching writing at post-secondary institutions in the U.S. and Canada for the last ten years. She was honoured to serve as the 2024-2025 writer-in-residence at the Winnipeg Public Library, where she worked with a record number of writers from across Manitoba.

She lives in Winnipeg, near the foot of Garbage Hill.

Avery Helm

Avery Helm is a freelance illustrator and graphic designer based in their home in Winnipeg, Manitoba on Treaty 1 Territory. She worked in design and advertising studios for 8+ years before making the leap to full-time freelancing. They're a jack-of-all-trades, and have experience doing branding + identity design, publication design, web design, social media, character design, plush design, art for video games, and merchandise design, among others!

She loves working with progressive individuals and helping to tell stories through illustration and design. She's passionate about human rights, education, and protecting the environment and all who inhabit it.

Melvin Daligdig

Melvin Daligdig is an emerging Filipino filmmaker and photographer whose work focuses on perseverance, community, and exploring the unknown. While Melvin's main inspirations have been action/adventure films like Kung Fu Hustle (2004) and Upgrade (2018) he has recently enjoyed branching into the comedy and horror genres because of shows like Dollface (2019) and anthology series like V/H/S/94 (2021). His work has been showcased at the International Toronto Reel Asian Film Festival, the Fascinasian Film Festival, the International Gimli film festival, and the Bali International Short Film Festival. Looking ahead, Melvin is excited to collaborate with other creatives to blend genres, push creative boundaries and inspire the next generation of creators.

Sam Posnick

Sam Posnick is an illustrator from the frigid plains of Winnipeg, Manitoba. You may have seen her work featured in smaller, local businesses or as part of product offerings from larger, international corporations including- Urban Outfitters, Seattle Children's Hospital, Chapters/Indigo, David's Tea, Netflix, and more. Her style is frequently vintage-flavoured with a modern twist but experimentation is also a fun trip to take. Her current passion project (as seen here) is her work on an illustrated tarot deck with a bird theme.

Yvette Cenerini

Yvette Cenerini (née Lagimodière) is a francophone Métis visual artist from Treaty One Territory. Her work in photocollage examines the intricacies of relationships and emotions through a simple aesthetic. Having obtained both a BEd (2001) and a BFA (2010), knowledge-sharing through art in the forms of teaching and community engagement is an important facet of her practice.
