Copyright Length of Ownership
How long does copyright last and how do you acquire it? What happens to your copyright if you pass away?
Copyright in Canada generally lasts for the life of the artist PLUS 70 years after their death.
From the moment you produce a creative work, you automatically have copyright protections under the law- including the right to reproduce and publicize your art- without needing to register your copyright. Registering with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) however, gives you additional protections if someone disputes your copyright.
One exception to this is if you create art in the course of work for an employer, in which case the employer will own the copyright to your work. However, if you create work as an independent contractor or freelancer, this exception does not apply!
