The Art of Managing Your Career Indigenous Perspectives course presents an in-depth overview of the practical skills you need to grow your arts and culture career! Regardless of your creative discipline, this course offers an invaluable skill-set to creative entrepreneurs, including envisioning and developing a career strategy, developing a business plan, marketing and promoting your work, bookkeeping and budgeting tips! We will have ASL interpreters on-site to welcome our Deaf artists.

For Indigenous artists working in any artistic discipline, artists who would like to know more about an Indigenous perspective, and Deaf artists. This course covers both business and cultural topics, including:

• Envisioning and developing a career strategy
• Effective business and communication skills
• Marketing and promoting your work
• Managing projects, financial affairs, and legal matters
• Cultural mapping and resources
• Explorations of protocols
• A history of Indigenous art in Canada
• Indigenous art in public, commercial and/or community realms

The course is open to anyone with an existing arts practice including actors, craftspeople, dancers, filmmakers, musicians, new media content creators, visual artists, writers and the like. If you are a self-employed artist, or looking to increase the portion of your employment derived from your art, then this course is for you.

Course participants will be expected to:

• Attend the four day intensive workshops scheduled March 15, 16, 17, and 18, 2018 from 10am – 4pm daily, with a 1 hour scheduled lunch break.
• Participate in group activities during the sessions.
• Complete assignments between sessions.
• Participate in program evaluation sessions.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  The course will be limited to a maximum of 15 participants drawn from across all artistic disciplines. Therefore, space is extremely limited. Please bring a bag lunch.

Yvette Hawkes (Métis) is a Winnipeg based freelance visual artist specializing in custom mixed media artwork and acrylic paintings. Yvette is an instructor, writer and organizer, who revels in sharing her experiences, the good and the bad, as both a Small Business Coach and a Consultant.
