Evolution: Iterative Mind | Laura Gross
July 14, 2022 at11:00 am - July 26, 2022 at5:00 pm
FreeStatement: My mental well-being and my artistry are tightly tied together, so my own understanding of how my brain works influences the art I create and how I create it.
One key characteristic of my brain is Aphantasia. This is the inability to see anything in your mind’s eye. I have a black hole where most people have a visual imagination inside their head. I do still have an imagination but I am unable to see it. I find it impossible to explain how I create art from that darkness, except to say that it is iterative… a flexible journey where the art evolves as it comes to life.
Born and raised in Winnipeg, MB, Laura Gross has been creating art for over 25 years. A life-long, self-taught artist, she has explored a wide variety of mediums from pencil to stained glass.
In 2003, Laura graduated from Sheridan College’s (Oakville, ON)
“Technical Theatre Arts” diploma program where she specialized in scenic painting, carpentry, and prop construction. Since then, she has continued to hone her artistic skills through experimentation and informal education.
Over the last 10 years, Laura has focused most of her time on acrylic painting, watercolors, and sculpting with polymer clay. Nature features prominently in both her paintings and sculptures with flowers, landscapes, and animals appearing in abstract and whimsical forms throughout her work.
Although Laura has a full-time career as an analyst in the software development industry, she makes time to work on artistic projects every day. Art is a fundamental part of how she sees herself and a crucial part of her mental health self-care.
