Writers in their Natural Habitat with katherena vermette

A six-part creative writing series creating community for six emerging writers with the Award-winning author katherena vermette.

This is an open call welcoming writing in all formats. Poetry, prose, fiction, non-fiction, scripts, performance, and hybrid genre writers are encouraged to apply.

katherena will be offering mentorship to assist you in developing your writing skills, narrative style and help you find your voice. Throughout the six-week series we will focus on peer review, editing and generating new work. With discussions on freelance writing, and the business skills all writers need to help get your work published.

Program Dates:  

Six consecutive Wednesdays from 6pm – 8pm,

Beginning Nov  02, 2022 and running until Dec 7, 2022

To Be Determined if classes will be held in person or via ZOOM

Admission to this program will be based on brief biographical statement and a sample of your written work.

Writing samples are to be no longer than 5 pages.

Participants for this program will be selected by the mentor for acceptance into the workshop.

Course Fee:  $200 + Creative Manitoba Membership.

Payment and Creative Manitoba Membership purchase required upon acceptance into program.

katherena vermette (she/her/hers) is a Red River Métis (Michif) writer from Treaty 1 territory, the heart of the Métis Nation. She has worked in poetry, novels, children’s literature, and film.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, her father’s roots run deep in St. Boniface, St. Norbert and beyond. Her mother’s side is Mennonite from the Altona and Rosenfeld area (Treaty 1).

vermette received the Governor General’s Literary Award for Poetry for her first book, North End Love Songs (The Muses’ Company). The Break (House of Anansi) won several awards including the Amazon.ca First Novel Award, and was a bestseller in Canada. Her National Film Board documentary, this river won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Short. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of British Columbia.

Her second novel, The Strangers (Hammish Hamilton) won the Atwood Gibson Writers Trust Fiction Prize and was named Chapters Indigo’s Book of the Year 2021. It was also longlisted for the Giller Prize.
