Creative Accessibility Across Canada

Creative Manitoba, in partnership with AANM, is proud to present a series of talks about creative and curatorial practices within the sphere of disability and accessibility.

Tangled Art + Disability

Tuesday, June 18 | 12 to 1 pm | Online

Join Sean Lee, Director of Programming at Tangled Art + Disability, for a presentation on principles and practices that have shaped the organization. Drawing from case studies and lessons learned, Lee will explore the boundary-breaking aspects of accessible curatorial practices, pushing beyond compliance-based understandings of access toward liberatory approaches. By examining disability arts as the ‘last avant-garde’ movement, as coined by Turner Prize-nominated artist Yinka Shonibare, Sean’s presentation will focus on the ways disability arts can disrupt dominant narratives of disability.

Sean Lee in Art Gallery

Sean Lee (he/they) is an artist and curator exploring the assertion of disability art as the last avant-garde. His methodology explores crip cultural practices as a means to resist normative idealities. Orienting towards a “crip horizon”, Sean’s practice explores the transformative possibilities of access aesthetics as an embodied politic that can desire the ways disability disrupts.

Sean is currently the Director of Programming at Tangled Art + Disability. He holds a B.A. in Arts Management and Studio from UTSC. Sean is also an independent curator, writer, lecturer, and advisor, adding his insights and perspectives on disability and accessibility to conversations across Canada, the US, and internationally. Sean serves on the board of the Toronto Arts Council and CARFAC Ontario, and is Chair of TAC’s Visual and Media Arts Committee. He is currently a member of the City of Toronto’s External Advisory Panel for the Action Plan for Toronto’s Culture Sector.

Creative Connector is a national online arts hub for creatives with disabilities to find community and discover accessible opportunities in the arts. Lindsay Fisher (she/her) is a creative and designer who is passionate about building community spaces that impact lives in positive ways. Her vision for Creative Connector is informed by her own experience of being told that her own disability needed to be hidden or “fixed”. When she discovered a community of artists with similar experiences challenging this narrative in their work, she became motivated to amplify this community and create opportunities for more people with disabilities to be creative and celebrate difference.

Creative Accessibility Across Canada is a series of workshops that will explore disability art, the experiences of artists with disabilities and how to make art accessible. These workshops are not only for emerging artists with disabilities, but arts organizations and artists at all levels of their career with and without disabilities.

Arts AccessAbility Network Manitoba is a regional not-for-profit artist run charitable organization dedicated to the full inclusion of artists and audiences with disabilities into all facets of the arts community.
