Join us for Episode 2, Season 4 of Urban Art Biz as we focus on Pitching a Show to Urban Shaman Gallery

Urban Shaman Contemporary Aboriginal Gallery is an Indigenous artist-run centre dedicated to meeting the needs of artists by providing a vehicle for artistic expression in all disciplines and at all levels by taking a leadership role in the cultivation of Indigenous art.

Join us as we focus on the history and impact of Urban Shaman Gallery in the contemporary art scene through the voice of their Artistic Director, Justin Bear L’Arrivee, while learning all the steps it takes to submit a proposal and pitch a show to Urban Shaman Gallery.

We will learn:

• The mandate of Urban Shaman Gallery
• How far in advance Urban Shaman programs their exhibitions
• How shows are chosen
• Who is on the Urban Shaman team and what they do
• How to submit a proposal for a show to Urban Shaman
• What an effective proposal looks like
• What pieces are required in your proposal– slides, CV or resume, statement, bio, support material, etc.

And there will be even more information provided, detailing what happens after submitting a successful proposal. For example:

• Installation – How your work is installed in the gallery, preparation and shipping advice
• Finances – Fee schedules: Does the artist get paid and by who and how?
• Marketing – What is expected of the artist? For instance, artist talks, and other promotional activities
• Insurance – Who covers the cost of insuring your work?
• Length of show, deinstallation concerns

Justin Bear L’Arrivee (he/him) is of mixed Cree and Scottish ancestry from Peguis First Nation (Maternal) and a citizen of the Manitoba Métis Federation (Paternal). He is an arts administrator, facilitator, and community worker who’s passionate about revitalizing Indigenous ways of being through arts and culture. He is currently the Artistic Director at Urban Shaman: Contemporary Indigenous Art.

With a focus on program development, community projects, and youth mentorship, his journey has been driven by a deep commitment to empowering and uplifting Indigenous voices. His practice is firmly rooted in community needs, and is deeply informed both by his work within the child-welfare & disability systems and in the artist-run centre sector.

Justin’s goal is to build decolonial spaces that foster Indigenous creativity, challenge oppressive systems, and build momentum for the next generation of Indigenous artists.

Urban Shaman Gallery is an Aboriginal artist-run centre dedicated to meeting the needs of artists by providing a vehicle for artistic expression in all disciplines, presenting contemporary Indigenous Aboriginal art with integrity while taking a leadership role in the cultivation of Indigenous art. Urban Shaman Contemporary Aboriginal Art is a nationally recognized leader in Aboriginal arts programming and one of the foremost venues and voices for Aboriginal art in Canada. Our focus on developing new programming and new ways of presenting it has resulted in increased exposure and the expansion of our activities. Urban Shaman is dedicated to the Aboriginal arts community and the arts community at large.

Urban Shaman Gallery will be hosting Warpaint from October 31 – December 14, 2024, featuring pieces by Brianna Wentz.

The opening reception will be November 1, from 5 – 9 pm.
