Join us for Season 4, Episode 3 of Urban Art Biz as we focus on Diversifying Your Market

Wednesday, Nov 27, 2024 from 12 – 1:00 pm CST

With our very special guests:
Storm Angeconeb and Jordan Stranger

As artists we dedicate our lives to developing our creative gifts and sharing our vision with as many people as we can. We also need to pay the rent, put food on the table and purchase supplies so that we can continue to develop our skills and knowledge and spend time creating. But what happens in your downtime, in between projects, grants, or ideas? How do you continue to generate an income to sustain your creative life?

You diversify!

Diversifying your income is so important for freelance artists. When you spread out the ways you earn money, you insulate yourself against those “slow times,” giving you the ability to take on (and seek out!) projects that truly excite you.

In this workshop we’ll hear about the experiences and artistic journeys of two incredible artists, Storm Angeconeb and Jordan Stranger, and how they’ve expanded their creative visions, making the most of their careers as artists by sharing traditional teachings to a wider audience through contemporary platforms without compromising their beliefs. We’ll cover a number of the subjects you see below:

Available avenues for artists to generate income:

  • Selling work in person and online
  • Gallery shows
  • Contracts/Private Commissions
  • Grants/Funding
  • Mentoring or teaching workshops
  • Presentations/Public Speaking/Consulting

How to expand the market for your work:

  • Original creations, for example; paintings, illustrations, or beadwork
  • Signed prints
  • Murals
  • Collaborations with other artists or organizations
  • Graphic design for others
  • Licensing your designs for reproduction

Things to think about:

  • Contracts
  • Fees
  • Royalties
  • Commissions
  • Direct sales
  • Client relationships
  • Compromises

We hope this workshop inspires each of you to create and expand your repertoire and begin to diversify your own portfolio!

The workshop is offered FREE. Please register online by 10:30 am CST on Nov 27, 2024, and a Zoom link will be sent to your email address by 11 am!

If you haven’t received the zoom link, please check your junk mail folder.

Storm Angeconeb is an Ojibwe artist, a member of Lac Seul, First Nation, Treaty Three Territory, born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Currently based in Red Lake, Ontario. Many of her works include animals and birds as representations of herself or those close to her. Storm continues to practice her art through painting, digital art and practicing beadwork.

“I am a self-taught Indigenous artist. Member of Lac Seul First Nation, Treaty Three Territory.
Since childhood, I’ve passionately explored painting, beadwork, and continual artistic growth. My creations echo the landscapes, people, and ancestral stories that shape my identity.”
Storm has just produced her first ever fabric collection ‘Abinoojiinh”- meaning our Children’. The inspiration for this line came from Storm’s journey of becoming a mother. “Every step, from carrying to birth and watching my son grow into the person he is today. I wanted to cherish that memory, and dedicate this line to all our children. As our children are gifts, they are blessings.”  The 100% cotton collection is expected to land at Marshall Fabrics in December 2024! Follow Storm @stormangeconeb to see her murals and artwork!

Jordan Stranger, an Anishinaabe artist and graphic designer, originally from Peguis First Nation, known for his colourful style represented through both massive murals and world wide Apple app store icons. He’s designed logos and graphics for Festival du Voyageur, APTN, Shopify, Audible, and Apple. His murals and artwork using cultural influences and symbolism can be found throughout the city of Winnipeg and he is the designer and artist behind the Winnipeg 150 logo. Stranger’s work is deeply rooted in the traditions within contemporary Indigenous culture, using his life experiences and spiritual practice learned through Ojibwe teachings to drive his artistic passions.

Jordans signature Totem Doodem was created for Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples with the intention of spreading totems of hope and love across so -called Canada and beyond. In such a crucial time of healing and reflection we need much more reminders and supports to guide us towards a better future.  To see more of Jordan’s work, visit www.totemdoodem.ca
