Bolo Tie Workshop
Saturday March 15 and 22 | 12:30 – 3:30pm
Duration: 6 hours
In this two afternoon workshop, participants will learn the one needle method of Indigenous beadwork and create a pansy centrepiece and bolo tie. This flower is based on one in the ancestor pillow case formerly owned by Harriet Inkster McMurray, currently housed at Seven Oaks House Museum. Connecting this workshop to a grandmother piece creates a living link between Indigenous art forms practiced by our ancestors to the present. Participants will learn the history of beadwork and its relationship with Indigenous Peoples in Manitoba.
About the Instructor – Margaret Firlotte
Margaret Firlotte is a Michif (Métis) & settler artist living in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Her michif family ties are to the Red River Valley and her family names are Gaudry and Laferty. She is a beadwork artist and has been practicing and honouring this art form since the spring of 2019. Margaret was part of the team who received the 2023 Governor General’s History
Award for Excellence in Museums: History Alive! for their project “mámawihítowin – Rasenbli – Ganaagishkwadaadiwin – Rencontre – Gathering”.
