Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra presents Women’s Day 4.0 & Symposium

On Thursday, March 6th, at the West End Cultural Centre, the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra presents a full day of women-led events celebrating International Women’s Day 2025! With so many extraordinarily talented women in the Winnipeg jazz scene, these events are your perfect opportunity to listen to and support some of the finest musicians Winnipeg has to offer as they share brand new compositions, beautiful messages of inclusion, and some of the best music you’ll hear this year!
The day starts at 2:00 pm with the Women-Led Jazz Symposium. This symposium offers an amazing lineup of presenters. Sessions include an in-person keynote by Juno-award winning artist Jocelyn Gould; breakout instrumental and vocal creativity sessions called ‘You Can Do It’; a ‘Living Giants’ jazz history session, and closing remarks by Dr. Nora Wilson on her experiences with intersectional feminism. The symposium is open to all: students, teachers, and jazz enthusiasts. Everyone is welcome to come, listen and learn from some fantastic leaders.
You will want to come to our evening events early to hear the talented students of the Young Women in Jazz Ensemble led by Cynthia Weevers performing at 7:05. This all-female presenting band can really play! Then, at 7:30 pm, the Women’s Day 4.0 concert kicks off and starts cooking! The year’s program will include a few favourites of the W2JO over our last few years, several commissions by members of the W2JO, several featured selections from our incredible Juno-award winning guest artist/guitarist Jocelyn Gould, and other great tunes by some of the leading women composers of today. These featured favourites include Big Yellow Taxi (Joni Mitchell), Bright Note (Jocelyn Gould), Seed Keepers (Monica Jones), I’m Every Woman (Whitney Houston), and so much more!
