Queerious is an annual curated art exhibition that showcases the talented 2SLGBTQIA+ artists from Winnipeg and Manitoba.
This year’s theme of spirit is based off the violet stripe of the original Pride flag, designed by Gilbert Baker in 1978. This was meant to represent the spirit of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, the resilience, creativity, and ultimately pride. When I think of spirit, I think of spirituality and the history that queer people have with being seen as more connected to the world beyond, often viewed as spiritual advisors for their community. Gender non-conforming individuals, such as Two-Spirit people of Indigenous cultures across Turtle Island, or babaylan of the Philippines, were especially seen as having a stronger connection to the spirits and were often revered in their communities because of this.
Winnipeg itself has a strong history associated with spiritualism and individuals searching for a connection between the living and the spirits beyond. Dr. T.G. Hamilton and his wife Lillian conducted hundreds of seances in their home on Henderson Highway between 1918 and 1945, attracting many spiritualists to Winnipeg. In 2008-2010 artist AA Bronson, of General Idea collective, created a collaborative performance series called “Invocation of Queer Spirits” touching on the link between spiritualism and the history queer people have with their connection to the otherworldly.
Queerious is about representing 2SLGBTQIA+ artists in Winnipeg and Manitoba and the work they make. If your work doesn’t fit into the above theme, please still submit! You do not need to make new work to submit.
