Sick + Twisted Theatre Seeking New Artistic Director/Leadership Team

We’re Looking for New Leadership

Our founder, Debbie Patterson, is preparing to step away as our Artistic Director. Her departure is designed to make room for a new leader. We are not framing this as a search for an Artistic Director or a Managing Director or an Executive Director, but as a search for new leadership. We are less focused on highlighting potential titles, than in finding the right person/team as a strong fit with our mission.
We are open to either one person or a team. We would be satisfied to see one person with all the qualities, skills, expertise and lived experience we are seeking. But we also know that we may see a duo, who combined, have all those attributes or the capacity to develop them.

WHO WE ARE
Sick + Twisted is a Winnipeg based theatre company and registered non-profit charity dedicated to creating work exploring the experience of living with a disability. We don’t create theatre for disabled people; we create theatre for everybody. We believe that there are deep universal truths of the human condition hidden behind the veil of disability. We believe our bodies tell the truth, and when we listen clearly and with curiosity, we can create work that reveals an audience to itself.

WHAT WE DO
Over the years our programming has grown to include Cabaret’s of new original work, Mainstage productions and co-productions with integrated companies of disabled and nondisabled artists, annual Holiday Pantos, Play Development, Live Audio Description for the community, a Community Choir and Classes in playwriting, comedy, songwriting, clown, musical theatre, acting for film & TV and more.

THE ROLE
Optimal Start date: September 2026

The new leadership will guide Sick + Twisted to achieve its core purpose — creating theatre that challenges society’s understanding of disability and expands our collective sense of what it means to be human — at a pivotal time in Sick + Twisted’s history. The successful applicant(s) will be responsible for the artistic and business leadership of our theatre company. We place a high value on collaborative models in both its artistic and administrative work, while promoting the voices and careers of artists with disabilities. This leadership role is one in which the candidate/s will develop Sick + Twisted as a theatre company which encourages learning and mentorship, so we are looking for a leader/s and facilitator/s who will help to maintain an environment in which everyone can thrive and grow.

We are looking for candidate(s) who will provide inspirational artistic and operational leadership, and we encourage applications from people with a range of different leadership styles and experience. Aligned with our mandate and disability justice values, Sick + Twisted prioritizes persons with lived experience of disability, Indigenous Peoples (First Nations, Inuit, Métis), 2SLGBTQIA+ persons, and persons who because of their race and/or colour, are a racialized minority in Canada.

If you have a commitment to Sick + Twisted’s purpose, a compelling vision for Sick + Twisted’s future on a local, national and international level, and you think you possess the right leadership and collaboration qualities, we’d love for you to apply.
