The Herdsman House in Neubergthal

The Herdsman House in Neubergthal Artist Residence and Guest House is in a national historic Mennonite Street village in Neubergthal, Manitoba, Canada. It is privately owned and operated by Margruite and Paul Krahn and has been hosting artists of various disciplines since 2015. Margruite is a visual artist, curator, and host of the Herdman House. Paul maintains the buildings and acts as soundman and technician.

With the guidance of Restoration Workshop/Parks Canada, and funding support from the provincial heritage governing body, Paul and Margruite restored and renovated the only remaining village herdsman cottage (c. 1880s) in Canada, as well as a 1927 barn into their home, studio, and 140 seat venue.

The Herdsman House facilitates space for visual artists/photographers, writers/playwrights, performing arts, musicians, educators, curators, culture and heritage.

Hera Nalam

Born and raised in the Philippines, Hera Nalam (she/they) first came to Treaty One Territory at 16 years old. Ever since then she has immersed herself in the local creative platforms all over Winnipeg from music, theatre, film and fashion and is making waves as a true inter-disciplinary artist.

Hera attended the University of Winnipeg and acquired her Bachelor of Arts with Honours for Theatre and Film Performance in 2019. She wowed audiences with her charm when she first performed on school productions at university such as Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Concord Floral and Time and The Conways (University of Winnipeg). Coming out of University, she was quick to book performances all over the city of Winnipeg in theatres including The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, Prairie Theatre Exchange, Shakespeare in the Ruins and Manitoba Theatre for Young Audiences. She also dabbles into film and landed gigs including stunt gigs for Escaping The Madhouse: The Nellie Bly Story (2019). She was last seen on screen on Winnipeg's hit Rom-Com of 2020, screening in over 8 theatres across Canada, I Propose We Never See Each Other Again After Tonight when she debuted on film as the lead actress. Hera received high praise from critics all over Canada including the Winnipeg Free Press, The Globe and Mail as well as the National Post. Hera’s performance also earned her a spot in iHeart Radio Ace Burpee’s list of Most Fascinating Manitobans of 2020.

Gwendolyn Collins

Gwendolyn Collins (she/her) is a theatre and film actor, writer, producer, devised theatre creator and the Co-Artistic Producer of One Trunk Theatre based on Treaty 1 Territory in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She has extensive experience overseeing film and theatrical projects from conception to final presentation. Having co-created many productions with One Trunk Theatre, Theatre Projects Manitoba and Green Kids Inc.

She has performed as an actor professionally for 14 years appearing on stage at Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, Prairie Theatre Exchange, Manitoba Theatre for Young People, Winnipeg Jewish Theatre and Theatre by the River. She has toured theatre shows having traveled across the prairies in One Trunk Theatre productions, PTE Munsch shows, for Green Kids Inc, RMTC rural tour and for MTYP. She has taught and facilitated theatre workshops for youth at MTYP, The Winnipeg Storytelling Festival and for Green Kids Inc. She has championed rural collaborations such as Small Town Ghost Stories with artists from Arborg and Talking Roots with artists from Pinawa, Altona, Morden and Neubergthal. Gwen is a graduate of The University of Winnipeg’s BA Honours program in theatre, and has trained with Ghost River Theatre in Calgary.

Theatre begins years before the audience gathers and the curtain rises, before directors and actors and sound, light, costume, set and digital designers all come together to collaborate on mounting a production.

It begins with the play, and the playwright, driven by a passion to show the world as it is, or as it could be, to reflect the human condition, to engage the world in a dialogue; an invitation to imagine, think, and feel collectively.

Since 1979, the Manitoba Association of Playwrights has been the only organization in the province devoted exclusively to the development of plays and playwrights. MAP has played a crucial and invaluable role in nurturing and supporting the vibrant theatre scene we enjoy today. As a service organization, MAP has helped develop countless plays that have graced our provincial, national and international stages for over 40 years, as well as supporting many of the locally developed Winnipeg Fringe plays, working with community theatres and university programs, and producing the Scirocco Manitoba High School Playwriting Program, now in its 26th year.

MAP has been the home of Manitoba's playwrights and storytellers for over four decades, supporting the development of their plays ... where theatre begins.
