Creative Accessibility: Accessibility for Theatre Audiences

Created in partnership with Arts AccessAbility Network of Manitoba

This workshop will provide you with an introduction to accessibility for theatre audiences, including instruction on relaxed performance, American Sign Language interpreted, audio described, and captioned performance.

The workshop speaker, Elena Anciro, will give examples of the accessibility practices used by theatre makers both locally and beyond to help you support accessibility and inclusion in your community. Sign up today to learn about the exciting opportunities in accessibility at every stage of a patron’s experience and within the creative process.

About the Speaker

Elena Anciro (she / her) is a disabled Filipina artist based in Treaty 1 Territory. She has worked in different facets of the arts as a performer in theatre, film and television, and as a theatre administrator and educator. Elena is an audio describer with Vocal Image Ensemble Winnipeg (VIEW) and has completed the British Council of Canada / Tangled Art + Disability’s national relaxed performance training. She serves on the Sick + Twisted Theatre Board of Directors, a company dedicated to creating work exploring the experience of living with a disability. She is also part of the core collaborator team that is developing Manitoba Outreach Theatre Hub (MOTH), a digital project that aims to connect and support Manitoban theatre communities by providing accessible resources and amplifying the voices of equity-seeking theatre workers. Elena earned her honours degree in theatre at the University of Winnipeg and recently completed a professional development project on access and inclusion through the support of the Manitoba Arts Council Arts Leaders Program.

Arts AccessAbility Network Manitoba is a regional not-for-profit artist run charitable organization dedicated to the full inclusion of artists and audiences with disabilities into all facets of the arts community.
