Urban Art Biz – with Cheryl L’Hirondelle

Nov 29, 2023 ,  12pm -1pm CST

Cheryl L’Hirondelle has sustained a ground-breaking career for 42 years, so far, in a variety of contemporary disciplines, from punk bands to public art (which I suppose one could argue are one in the same), while staying true to tradition and Cree Worldview.  Cheryl’s use of language and land as a launch pad for such an incredible body of interdisciplinary work, including being a recipient of the 2021 GG Award in Visual Art, is inspiring to say the least.

Join us in conversation as Cheryl shares their knowledge and story with us, fills us in on what’s next and what it takes to manage such a beautiful and varied career that touches all aspects of art making from the sublime to the political.

The workshop is offered Free. Please register online by 10:30 am CST Nov 29, 2023, the morning of the event, and a zoom link will be sent to your email address by 11AM ! If you feel that you haven’t received the zoom link, please check your junk/spam mail folder.

UAB is a series of online workshops focusing on the business side of art from an Indigenous perspective, presented in partnership with Urban Shaman Contemporary Aboriginal Art Gallery.

Cheryl L’Hirondelle (Cree/Halfbreed; German/Polish) is an award-winning interdisciplinary artist and singer/songwriter whose family roots are from Treaty Six: Papaschase First Nation / amiskwaciy wāskahikan (Edmonton) and Kikino Metis Settlement, AB.

Her work investigates and articulates a dynamism of nēhiyawin (Cree worldview) in contemporary time-place incorporating Indigenous language(s), music, audio, video, VR, sewn objects, the olfactory, and audience/user participation to create immersive environments towards ‘radical inclusion’ and decolonisation. As a songwriter, L’Hirondelle focuses on sharing nēhiyawēwin (Cree language) and Indigenous and contemporary song-forms and personal narrative songwriting as methodologies toward survivance.

Cheryl was awarded two imagineNATIVE New Media Awards (2005 & 2006) and two Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards (2006 & 2007 as part of M’Girl) and is a recipient of the 2021 Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Art. She also exhibits, performs and presents nationally and internationally, and she is currently a PhD candidate with SMARTlab at University College Dublin.
