About the Garry Theatre

The Garry Theatre is a historic downtown Selkirk landmark being revitalized into a vibrant, community-led hub for film, live performance, and community events. Originally built in the 1940s, the theatre is entering a new chapter as a not-for-profit cultural venue that celebrates creativity, collaboration, and community.

Position Summary

The Executive Director provides visionary leadership to the Garry Theatre, ensuring its success as a vibrant centre for film, performing arts, and community engagement. This role oversees all aspects of operations, programming, partnerships, marketing, and financial sustainability. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors, directs staff, and works closely with community partners to fulfill the theatre’s mission and ensure long-term growth and relevance.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategic Planning

  • Develop and implement the theatre’s strategic plan in alignment with the mission, vision, and values.
  • Provide leadership to staff and volunteers, fostering a culture of creativity, inclusion, and collaboration.
  • Work closely with the Board of Directors to support and deliver governance, planning, and policy development.
  • Represent the theatre in the community and build strong relationships with artists, patrons, funders, and partners.

Programming & Artistic Direction

  • Coordinate with film distributors or booking agents to schedule films for theatre, negotiating terms and contracts.
  • Technical coordination to ensure content that digital cinema packages are received, ingested, tested and ready for public viewing.
  • Oversee the curation of diverse programming including film screenings, live performances, special events, and community initiatives.
  • Collaborate with artists, filmmakers, and producers to ensure programming reflects a balance of artistic excellence and community relevance.
  • Ensure programming aligns with audience interests, budget, and operational capacity.

Financial Management & Fund Development

  • Prepare and manage the annual budget, ensuring responsible stewardship of resources.
  • Oversee financial reporting and ensure compliance with funding and audit requirements.
  • Lead fundraising initiatives including grants, sponsorships, memberships, and donor relations.
  • Explore earned revenue opportunities through rentals, concessions, and other creative avenues.

Operations & Facility Management

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the theatre, including staffing, ticketing, maintenance, and patron services.
  • Ensure the facility is safe, accessible, and welcoming.
  • Manage vendor and contractor relationships, including technical, custodial, and concession services.

Marketing, Communications & Community Relations

  • Manage marketing and public relations strategies to grow audiences and strengthen the theatre’s profile.
  • Serve as the public face of the organization, engaging with media, community organizations, and stakeholders.
  • Promote community engagement through partnerships, education initiatives, and special events.

Human Resources & Team Leadership

  • Recruit, train, and supervise staff and volunteers.
  • Foster a positive, safe, and inclusive workplace culture.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and support professional development opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in arts management, business administration, communications, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of leadership experience in movie theatre industry, arts, culture, or nonprofit management.
  • Proven ability in strategic planning, budgeting, and fundraising.
  • Strong understanding of film exhibition, performing arts presentation, or venue operations.
  • Excellent communication, relationship-building, and public speaking skills.
  • Passion for arts, culture, and community development.
  • Must be available for evenings and weekends.

Compensation

Salary: $60,000-$70,000, commensurate with experience, plus benefits package.
